About The Position

Inova’s Fairfax Hospital is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist 2 to join its Blood Bank team. This is a full-time evening-shift position scheduled Monday through Friday and every other weekend. The role performs laboratory testing and quality-control activities, supports quality assurance and inspections, follows site-specific procedures, and serves as a technical resource for coworkers, customers, and patients.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in science from a college or university recognized by a regional or national accreditation agency.
• One year of clinical experience. Successful completion within the last five years of a qualifying NAACLS- or ABHES-accredited laboratory program, or a foreign medical laboratory science clinical training program, may be used in lieu of one year of full-time acceptable clinical experience.
• At start, ASCP or AMT Board certification consistent with the scope of responsibility, including one of the listed certifications: MT, MLS, MLT, BB, SBB, C, H, M, SH, SCT, MB, SMB, SM, SC, or HEW.

• A degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Review technical activities for quality assurance in accordance with facility requirements.
• Participate in and help prepare the laboratory for self-inspections and onsite inspections.
• Follow site-specific Standard Operating Procedures and instructions, read the SOPs annually, and document knowledge of their contents.
• Perform required quality-control measures, including corrective actions and documentation, for procedures and instrumentation.
• Recognize quality-control problems or discrepancies, attempt to determine their causes, and notify appropriate individuals according to established procedures.
• Serve as a resource person or key operator for coworkers, customers, and patients with technical questions.
• Demonstrate expanded knowledge of technical and administrative tasks beyond normal technical operations.
• Report accurate results while minimizing corrected reports not attributable to auto-verification or specimen conditions beyond technical control.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
