Medical Lab Technologist (7A-7P)
About The Position
The Medical Lab Technologist is responsible for programming and processing laboratory equipment according to department policies and manufacturer safety guidelines. This role involves detecting and investigating spurious or abnormal results, resolving instrument codes to ensure accurate patient test results, and maintaining competency in all assigned laboratory areas. The technologist must also demonstrate proper documentation of quality control, corrective actions, maintenance procedures, and critical values, as well as correctly ordering reflex or add-on tests and utilizing appropriate patient forms. A key aspect of the role is monitoring pending test reports to ensure accurate processing and verification of ordered tests.
Requirements
- Associate degree obtained from an accredited program in Medical Laboratory Technology.
- Current licensure in the State of Florida in all five clinical areas (Microbiology, Serology/Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology and Immunohematology).
- MLT ASCP or AMT Certified (Generalist).
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
- Demonstrates basic computer skills and knowledge consistent with the needs of their department.
Responsibilities
- Program and process laboratory equipment according to department policies and manufacturer safety guidelines.
- Detect spurious or abnormal results and follow investigative steps to determine if rejection/recollection is needed.
- Investigate and resolve various instrument codes, utilizing appropriate resources to assure accurate patient test results.
- Maintain competency in all assigned areas of the laboratory.
- Achieve minimum of 80% on assigned proficiency testing (100% Blood Bank proficiency testing).
- Demonstrate the proper procedure for documenting quality control results, corrective actions, and maintenance procedures.
- Use the proper procedure for completing worksheets and documenting critical values.
- Order reflex or add-on tests as appropriate per policy.
- Know the proper patient forms (downtime, OneBlood, KWB, other reference labs) and use them correctly.
- Demonstrate understanding of document control for manually resulted tests and save required printouts for review.
- Monitor pending test report to assure ordered tests are properly processed and verified.
- Adhere to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
- Maintain and ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
- Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Be willing to receive constructive feedback to enhance self-improvement.
- Complete work within designated time.
- Attend and participate on hospital committees, as appropriate.
- Wear required identification while on duty.
- Do not avoid challenging tasks.
- Assist in the training of students, co-workers, or other personnel.
- Relay important information to other staff/shifts to maintain consistency in operations.
- Understand how to utilize the grievance process to resolve concerns.
- Know the limitations of their license/certifications and do not practice outside these limitations.
- Maintain cleanliness of equipment and department.
- Be responsible for the safe handling of equipment as well as maintaining safety for themselves.
- Know the proper procedure for calling codes and the proper response for each code according to department protocol (i.e. fire, lock down, infant abduction, bomb threat, etc.).
- Know the proper procedure for reporting incidents involving the patient, visitor, or employee.
- Know where to find SDS information when needed.
- Be aware of hazards and hazardous materials and how to maintain a safe environment.
