About The Position

Scotland Memorial Hospital is seeking a full-time Medical Lab Tech to join their team. This role involves performing duties across various laboratory departments, including Chemistry, Toxicology, Microbiology, Hematology, Coagulation, Serology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, and specimen collection. The ideal candidate will be proficient in using laboratory instrumentation and computer systems, including the Epic EHR system. Strong communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills are essential for success in this position. The role also requires adherence to quality control programs, inventory management, and age-specific competency for patient care.

  • Ability to perform duties free of errors by carefully following all protocols.
  • Ability to operate equipment (including maintenance and troubleshooting) according to Laboratory and manufacturer protocol.
  • Knowledge of the quality control program for each instrument and test and compliance with all requirements.
  • Knowledge of instrument reagent and supply requirements.
  • Familiarity with Corporate and Laboratory Compliance Plan and adherence to compliance intent.
  • Knowledge of human growth and development through the life span of the patient and ability to meet the needs of and provide the care to these patients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties assigned in Chemistry, Toxicology, Microbiology, Hematology, Coagulation, Serology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Specimen collection, and Specimen send-outs.
  • Work effectively with computer systems for laboratory processes and workflows, including reading and responding to emails and policies.
  • Organize and plan work, make decisions with independent judgment, and document critical value calls and read-backs in the EHR.
  • Exhibit effective communication skills (writing, listening, reading, talking) to prevent misinterpretation of test results and instructions.
  • Perform duties free of errors by following all protocols and continuously reviewing the EHR for timely completion of tests.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment according to protocol and document appropriately.
  • Notify Patient Care Areas promptly in cases of instrument downtime.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and comply with quality control programs for each instrument and test.
  • Exhibit knowledge of instrument reagent and supply requirements, using them economically and according to specifications.
  • Actively participate in inventory control, notifying relevant personnel when supplies fall below a two-week level or when opening the last kit.
  • Maintain passing grades on all competency and proficiency tests.
  • Exhibit familiarity with and adhere to the Corporate and Laboratory Compliance Plan.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of human growth and development across the lifespan and the ability to meet the needs of patients in various age categories (Neonatal/infant, Pediatrics, Adolescence, Young adult/adult, Middle-age, Geriatric).
  • Notify Section leaders, Chief Technologist, Laboratory Director, and/or Pathologist of unresolved problems in a timely manner.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
