About The Position

The Medical Lab Scientist independently performs laboratory procedures for which they have been trained and demonstrated competency. They perform laboratory testing on patients of all ages, applying professional knowledge of laboratory procedures to execute, interpret, and/or analyze tests accurately and promptly. In the absence of the lead or supervisor, the Medical Lab Scientist oversees the technical activities of the section or department.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, plus sufficient college and/or technical school coursework and clinical training to meet the requirements for testing and certification as a medical technologist by an approved certifying agency.
• Three years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
• Certification as a medical technologist or medical laboratory scientist by ASCP, AMT, or AAB, in accordance with Georgia Department of Community Health healthcare facility clinical laboratory regulations; required upon hire.
• A person who recently moved to Georgia may be temporarily classified as a technologist for up to 18 months to complete an approved qualifying examination; required within 1.5 years.
• AAB provisional certification is not accepted.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, biomedical science, medical technology, or a life or biological science such as biology, biochemistry, or microbiology.

• Oversee technical activities of the section or department when the lead or supervisor is absent.
