About The Position
The Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) performs routine testing on blood, tissues, and other body specimens and provides physicians with quality results using clinical laboratory equipment. The role requires an understanding of patient safety and laboratory techniques to protect patient safety and anonymity. The MLS performs analytical testing, assesses specimen acceptability and unusual results, follows protocols when factors may affect measurements, and performs quality control before releasing patient results. The role also includes maintaining a safe and efficient work area, checking and troubleshooting equipment, cleaning, and monitoring temperatures according to hospital policies. Other duties may be assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Biology, or Biochemistry through a CLIA-approved program.
- MLS Medical Lab Scientist certification, or eligibility for certification through a nationally recognized certification agency; ASCP is preferred.
- Ability to provide quality, error-free work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to engage professionally with staff and patients.
Nice To Haves
- Completion of an externship program.
- Certification through ASCP is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Perform analytical tests on biological specimens in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner in compliance with documented laboratory procedures.
- Determine specimen acceptability through visual inspection or recognition of abnormal or unusual results.
- Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and take appropriate action according to protocols.
- Perform quality control for all testing and meet established ranges before releasing patient results.
- Maintain a safe and efficient work environment by performing equipment checks, cleaning the work area, monitoring temperatures according to hospital policies, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
