About The Position

Responsible for performing routine duties as directed by Laboratory Manager. Performs chemical, microscopic, serologic, hematologic, immunohematologic, parasitic, and bacteriologic tests to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology
  • Certification/Licensure as a Medical Lab Scientist by ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) or equivalent.
  • Maintain regulatory requirements
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled; complete work within designated timelines.
  • Demonstrates the ability to adhere to the mission, ethics and goals of the District.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate with patients, guests and staff in a courteous, respectful and helpful manner.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to function in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, urinalysis, and coagulation.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of microbiological culture and staining procedures.
  • Responsible for performing high-complexity testing.
  • Correlates results with diagnosis; questions all incompatible results.
  • Consults with appropriate personnel when test findings are unusual and/or difficulties are encountered in testing.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge of proper identification and reporting of medical/health care errors.
  • Protects the patient in the event of a medical/health care error and, as appropriate, assists in medical/health care error resolution.
  • Notifies patient care unit and/or physician of critical lab values.
  • Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
  • Follows Standard Precautions and infection control procedures at all times.
  • Performs quality control checks on equipment, performs calibrations and troubleshoots out-of-range results.
