About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist I is responsible for testing patient specimens, ensuring accuracy of tests, and communicating results to providers. This role involves performing high complexity tests, operating specialized equipment for quantitative or qualitative analysis, and maintaining acceptable levels of quality control. Key duties include determining specimen suitability, ensuring correct patient identity throughout testing, and investigating/correcting unexpected or unacceptable results. The scientist must also ensure compliance with regulatory requirements from CAP, AABB, DNV, and FDA, and maintain equipment through calibration and troubleshooting. The position requires significant interaction with nursing staff and other hospital departments. UMC Health System is a Magnet Designated hospital with 501 licensed beds and 62 site locations, serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC). Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or closely related degree
  • Demonstrated understanding of correct procedures to accurately identify patients, label specimens, and verify there is adequate sampling for the test ordered
  • Proficient use of computer peripherals
  • Clear communicator; Speak, read, and write English fluently

Responsibilities

  • Performs high complexity tests as directed by the Laboratory Director, including operating equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis
  • Test patient specimens, establishing and ensuring acceptable levels of quality control are maintained; determine suitability of specimens and ensure correct patient identity throughout the testing process
  • Recognize and investigate unexpected, uncontrolled, and unacceptable results
  • Identify problems that may affect test performance or reporting of test results and correct problems when possible; document corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Ensure requirement of the CAP, AABB, DNV, and FDA (as applicable to section/shift) are followed
  • Ensure equipment is operational by performing equipment maintenance, calibrating, and troubleshooting
  • All other duties assigned related to the medical laboratory
