We're seeking an experienced Medical Lab Scientist II / Medical Technologist II with a background in Blood Bank, Core Lab & Microbiology. The role involves performing various laboratory tests and procedures while adhering to standard operating procedures on patient specimens to assist in the diagnosis, study and treatment, or prevention of disease. The position upholds the values of the organization by providing and demonstrating exemplary customer service skills throughout the preanalytical, analytical and post analytical processes. Responsibilities may include performing standardized and semi-routine biological, chemical, hematological, immunological, immunohematological, microbiological, and serological tests in a research or clinical laboratory. Additionally, the role involves performing preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments, calibrating equipment, operating laboratory equipment, and troubleshooting malfunctions. The Medical Lab Scientist may serve as a key operator for new equipment and procedures, prepare reagents, monitor inventory, and be responsible for ordering. Quality control is a key aspect, including assisting in gathering data for quality improvement standards and preparing reports. Evaluating the validity of specimens and test results, comparing them to previous data, identifying critical values, and reporting them are essential. In complex cases, the scientist evaluates information to determine if test results should be released, repeated, or referred to a pathologist. Abnormal or unexpected results are referred to the appropriate individual(s). Accurate and complete documentation of patient information, equipment, and test results is required to comply with regulations, including documenting corrective actions for out-of-range test values. Maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe work area is crucial. The role may involve serving on the laboratory's safety committee, writing and maintaining safety and infection control policies, and ensuring correct Safety Data Sheets are maintained. Compliance with hospital and laboratory safety and infection control policies is mandatory to prevent exposure to infectious materials. The scientist may monitor staff during safety compliance audits or drills. Performing required calculations and reporting results by phone and/or computer, and auditing computer reports to ensure scheduled tests are completed are also part of the duties. Assisting in gathering data to monitor quality improvement standards and preparing reports is required. The role may involve independently researching and assisting in the development of new procedures, compiling and evaluating data, and performing statistical analyses. Responsibility for section's data base files and/or assisting in software testing may also be included. Educating staff and students by demonstrating procedures and assisting in orientation and continuing education activities is expected. The scientist may teach medical technology theory and techniques, provide guidance to lower-level technologists, develop teaching plans, create student assessment tools, and prepare written examinations. Attending educational in-services and maintaining certification as required are necessary. Working with a leader to formulate a plan for professional development is encouraged. Participation in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments is also part of the role. In some instances, the scientist may perform venipuncture or capillary puncture to obtain blood specimens. Other related duties as required.
