  • Creates and maintains an environment that places emphasis on laboratory safety. Works with coworkers and management to correct any condition that has the potential to have a negative impact on correct laboratory safety.
  • Collect, clean, sterilize and return labware as per standard operation procedures.
  • Knowledgeable of applicable standards and participate in mock inspections and safety audits.
  • Regular review of maintenance/temperature and other logs to ensure staff cooperation prior to monthly signature by supervisor of section.
  • Monitors and documents Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and investigates non-conformances.
  • Advises management of any problems or deficiencies in work performance and any significant trends in workflow.
  • Assists QA team with improving processes and prepares training material to orient staff on new procedures.
  • Coordinator for special projects.
  • Participates in laboratory Performance Improvement/Quality Assurance projects, as assigned.
  • Oversees activities of assigned shift/area. Performs special assignments, as directed.
  • Functions as point of contact, during supervisor absence.
  • Coordinates/assigns/delegates work to MLAs to meet workload requirements.
  • Reviews workload and workflow and makes recommendations on procedures to improve efficiency and to respond to changes.
  • Monitors MLA activities to assure accurate, thorough completion of work. Reports any problems to supervisor
  • Follows up on problem specimens/special requests with hospital staff.
  • Participates in QI activity and projects through participation in data collection of ancillary activity, problem identification and resolution, and group committee work, as assigned.
  • Maintains knowledge and understanding of LIS and reference lab systems.
  • Responsible for periodic monitoring of system, where applicable.
  • Tests new software upgrades and equipment interfaces.
  • Prepares new test codes and sets up proper billing codes with lab management.
  • Works and collaborates with LIS team to ensure LIS functionality meets the needs and workflows of the assigned laboratory.
  • Works with lab management and LIS to develop test/validation/verification plans.
  • Serves as a liaison between specialty area and LIS in the coordination of software interface installations, validations and implementations.
  • Represents assigned laboratory on LIS items and on applicable task forces and committees.
  • Verifies/audits scanned documents.
  • Manages TeamShare for consistent appearance and functionality pertaining to lab.
  • Participates in advanced training.
  • Serves as a liaison between finance and laboratory management team to requests new, modify existing and inactivate test specific CDMs to ensure proper billing procedures. Conducts CDM audits at management’s request.
  • Performs other miscellaneous LIS related tasks at laboratory management’s request.
  • Issues blood products to patient floors and monitors supply of blood products in the laboratory.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies in all areas for processing components.
  • Inspects and rotates supplies to avoid expiration of supplies 100% of the time.
  • Identifies depleted items and notifies supervisor accordingly.
  • Reconciles supplies received with orders place and verifies correct items have been received.
  • Maintains adequate supply of labeled collection bags at all times.
  • Irradiates Blood products.
  • Prepares components from whole blood and apheresis collections to be used for transfusion.
  • Assist Pathologist Assistants in gross room laboratory organization and operational activities, performs inventory and set-up of stations and equipment.
  • Management of the daily gross room dashboard to track delayed Specimens.
  • Organize completed specimens by grossing dates and get them ready for storage.
  • Return residual tissue to storage after case has been grossed.
  • Organize specimens in file for easy retrieval and coordination for Discard.
  • Obtain specimens from storage when additional sections are needed.
  • Track specimens that are not meant to be discarded.
  • Get specimens ready for discard.
  • Participates in QI activity and projects through participation in data collection of ancillary activity, problem identification and resolution, and group committee work, as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and, if necessary, accessions all samples as soon as they arrive in the laboratory. Follows established procedures for accessioning specimens in the laboratory computer system.
  • Reviews all test requests thoroughly for errors, omissions, clarity, and potential problems.
  • Checks that test requests are appropriate for specimen received and that specimen meets all requirements before proceeding with accessioning (e.g., assures correct specimens based on color of tube top against requested tests).
  • Contacts physicians and/or nurses to obtain necessary information and or additional specimens as needed. Documents the information correctly.
  • Prioritizes STAT/RUSH samples for immediate processing, per laboratory guidelines.
  • Accurately enters into the computer the correct information such as order test codes, copy to, and billing information, according to laboratory guidelines. Generates labels.
  • Follows patient identification practices as detailed in Standard Operating Procedures Manual. Verifies that the name on requisition or Order Entry order matches the name on specimen and on all specimen labels. Maintains 100% accuracy on all labeling of specimens and computer entry.
  • Follows all applicable laboratory, departmental and institutional policies and procedures related to billing. Participates in and promotes the prevention, detection and resolution of instances of noncompliance with laboratory, departmental and institutional billing policies and procedures.
  • Follows established credit procedures when criteria for satisfactory specimen are not met.
  • Maintains patient and HIV confidentiality according to laboratory policy.
  • Always follows Patient Confidentiality guidelines. Releases information only to those who are authorized. Accesses patient information on a need to know basis. Discards all confidential patient information according to Laboratory Confidentiality policy.
  • Notifies supervisor of any problems that occur during the accessioning process.
  • Reviews name on labels and attaches labels to appropriate specimen tubes.
  • Places and sorts labeled specimen on racks/bins and transports to appropriate processing area.
  • Maintains 100% accuracy on all labeling of specimens.
  • Alerts technologists or pathologist of STAT/RUSH requests to ensure prompt processing and analysis.
  • Centrifuges specimens following the procedures detailed in the Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
  • Picks up and delivers stored slides and completed pathology cases.
  • Prepares specimens for sending out to another laboratory utilizing the laboratory computer system.
  • Properly aliquot the specimens according to specimen requirements

  • Makes arrangements for pickup of specimens (e.g., main lab STAT specimens, reference laboratories).
  • Maintain supplies for the processing area (e.g., requisitions, special tubes, shipping labels, biohazards bags, shipping logs, etc)

  • Resolves specimen delivery issues for any specimens sent to another laboratory for testing.
  • Notifies transportation department of samples delivered in error and arranges for transportation department to pick-up and transport specimen to the correct laboratory.
  • Rotates through assigned work areas of the section.
  • Assists with specimen archiving, including capping of tubes and discarding of older specimens when expired.
  • Filing of archived specimens for easy retrieval.
  • Places specimen racks on analyzers and starts instrument processing.
  • Performs waived testing as per SOP under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Release crossmatched blood products.
