About The Position

This opportunity for a Fee-Basis Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) is within the Medicine Service, on a Fee-for-Service basis. The primary responsibility of this position is to monitor and operate equipment used in sleep studies. The position is a Fee Basis-Intermittent, as-needed-basis appointment. Monitoring two sleep studies is equivalent to one procedure, and each procedure is paid $500.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation/examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement.
  • Must complete all application requirements.
  • Must serve a 1 or 2-year trial period.
  • At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled.
  • Experience which provided a knowledge of the more complex procedures as well as knowledge of the uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders.
  • Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians.
  • Normal use of arms and legs, and good visual and auditory acuity.
  • Position requires emotional stability to deal effectively with multitasking and high-volume patient flow and competing demands.
  • Professional appearance per medical center dress code, attitude and demeanor are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is desirable.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and operate equipment used in sleep studies.
  • Monitor two sleep studies, which is equivalent to one procedure.
  • Summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form.
  • Recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders.
  • Take appropriate action based on event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures, etc.).
  • Provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians.
  • Conduct full sleep studies including overnight studies.
  • Evaluate the relationship of events, sleep stages, and possible medical conditions which influence or result from events occurring during sleep.
  • Anticipate problems likely to occur during the sleep study and prepare for such situations.
  • Make changes in established procedures, or recommend alternative courses of action.
  • Mentor lower graded technicians.
