About The Position

UChicago Medicine is seeking a Medical Healthcare Interpreter – Arabic for its Interpreter Services Department. This on-site position at Hyde Park involves facilitating communication between patients and families with limited English proficiency (LEP) and their healthcare providers, including physicians, nurses, and lab technicians. The interpreter must be proficient in both English and Arabic, capable of accurately communicating medical information, and skilled in oral interpretation and translation of essential medical documents. Key principles for this role include confidentiality, impartiality, respect, professionalism, integrity, accuracy, and cultural competence. Interpreters are expected to adhere to the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in HealthCare and the International Medical Interpreter Association’s Medical Interpreting Standards of Practice. Additionally, the role involves educating healthcare team members on interpreting duties and ethical standards, coordinating with external agencies, advocating for patients to obtain medical information, and cooperating with various UChicago Medicine departments to assist international visitors.

Requirements

• Successful completion of a formal program in medical interpreting
• Certification by CCHI or CMI within 1 year of hiring
• Ability to sustain a busy and flexible work schedule
• Excellent grammatical skills in both languages
• Extensive knowledge of medical terminology especially in areas of Peds/Adult Hematology Oncology, Organ Transplant, Genetics, Neurology/Neurosurgery, ENT, Peds/Adult Orthopedics, Human Anatomy, Physiology, and medical procedures
• Interpersonal skills are required with strong orientation to customer services
• Strong understanding of cultural diversity and how it affects clinical encounters

Nice To Haves

• Undergraduate degree from an accredited University is preferred
• Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Medical Health Care Interpreter in an acute care specialty medical center is preferred

Responsibilities

• Face-to-face interpreting between patients and providers in such a way that the original meaning is maintained
• Act in the interest of the shared goal of achieving the wellbeing of the patient
• Administrative duties include dispatching and scheduling duties, collecting and entering encounter data for monthly reports and participating in departmental initiatives.
• Occasional oral translation of clinical / procedural documents or non-clinical into the language of the patient as well as telephonic or video medical healthcare interpretation
• Educate medical staff and physicians to access all medical healthcare interpreter services and maintain strict patient confidentiality
• Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of UChicago Medicine
