MHP A Works under general supervision. Uses technical discretion within well defined practices and policies. Coordinate personnel monitoring/licensing program. Assist others in identifying problem areas, analyzing the issues and implementing corrective actions. Assist others in procuring necessary instrumentation to meet monitoring needs. Evaluate current regulations assists in compliance with Federal, State and Industry programs and maintaining radiation doses ALARA. Write and update SOPs and policies for assigned areas. Makes recommendations for changes based on interpretations and principles of professional practice. Supervise health Physics Technician and assign work to technicians assigned to area. MHP B Under a large, broad scope medical license, assist user groups in developing and conducting procedures for the safe use of radiation sources and radioactive materials; supervise technical staff. Implement programs to ensure compliance with Federal, State and Industry programs and maintain radiation doses ALARA. Audit compliance with regulatory and licensing requirements. Maintain strong working knowledge of applicable regulations and standards. Independently and routinely identify problem areas, analyze the issues and implement corrective actions. Plan, assign, and evaluate the work of technical staff. Write and update SOPs and policies to maintain compliance. Work on unique and complex projects.

Requirements

  • MHP A: Typically require a MA/MS in Health Physics or related science with 1-2 experience, or a BA/BS with 3 years’ experience.
  • The duties typically involve small projects or programs that are well established with limited scope.
  • Work is done under general supervision.
  • Work assignments generally involve Radiation Safety Programs that present lower risk.
  • MHP B: Typically require a MA/MS with 3-5 years’ experience or a BA/BS with 5-7 years’ experience.
  • MHP B’s work under very general supervision on large projects that are frequently self-identified and self-initiated.
  • Work requires considerable technical ability and attention to detail and is broad in scope.
  • Work involves Radiation Safety Programs in clinical areas or areas where regulatory and safety needs are considerable.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, direct, and implement policies and procedures for use of radioactive materials in research and clinical areas.
  • Assist in identifying problems, analyzing issues and implementing corrective actions.
  • Review and incorporate government and industry radiation protection standards to assure University compliance and worker safety.
  • Interact with research and clinical staff to ensure proper equipment function, security and maintain patient safety.
  • Act as resource for PIs and Authorized Users.
  • Investigate accidents.
  • Provide training.
  • Act as lead on small to medium projects.
  • Supervise health physics technician, conducting performance evaluation.
  • Assign work to other health physics technicians, during their rotation to assigned areas.
  • May assist with hiring process for new staff.
  • Evaluate and interpret appropriate regulations to ensure compliance with Federal, State and Industry programs and maintain radiation doses ALARA.
  • Write and update SOPs and policies for assigned areas, ensuring current with changes in regulations and best practices.
