Medical Director

LifeMD•New York, NY
•$325,000 - $365,000

About The Position

LifeMD is seeking a Medical Director to provide physician-level clinical leadership and accountability for the quality, safety, and compliance of care delivered across its multi-vertical telehealth platform. The Medical Director supervises and supports MD/DO providers and collaborates with the Clinical NP Manager on clinical performance across the physician and NP workforce. The role partners with clinical operations, product, Legal, Compliance, Finance, and other teams to shape care delivery, review new offerings, and support multi-state regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include physician supervision and performance management; serving as a collaborating or supervising physician for NPs where required by state law; developing and maintaining evidence-based clinical protocols; reviewing new products, service lines, and platform features; identifying and responding to clinical risks; supporting quality and patient-safety activities; and managing physician timecards, payroll, and compensation administration. In states where NPs have full practice authority, supervisory responsibilities are administrative and quality-based rather than a legal collaboration requirement.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree.
  • Active, unrestricted medical license.
  • Board certification in a relevant specialty, such as Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.
  • At least 8 years of clinical practice experience, including telehealth experience.
  • Experience supervising or collaborating with NPs and/or PAs, ideally across multiple states.
  • Familiarity with telehealth care delivery models and multi-state regulatory and licensing considerations.
  • Demonstrated experience developing clinical protocols or guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Multi-state licensure or willingness to obtain additional state licenses.
  • Prior experience in a Medical Director or similar clinical leadership role at a telehealth or multi-site healthcare company.
  • Experience across multiple clinical verticals, such as primary care, weight management, mental health, urgent care, women’s health, or men’s health.
  • Familiarity with EHR or telehealth platforms and clinical quality metrics or reporting.
  • Experience navigating state-by-state variation in NP scope of practice.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate MD/DO providers across the platform’s clinical verticals.
  • Establish and monitor physician performance metrics, including documentation quality, protocol adherence, patient outcomes, escalation handling, and complaint or incident rates.
  • Partner with the Clinical NP Manager to support accountability for clinical performance across physicians and NPs.
  • Conduct or oversee periodic chart audits and peer review.
  • Serve as collaborating or supervising physician for NPs in states where required by law.
  • Maintain compliant, current collaborative practice agreements, including required chart-review percentages, meeting cadence, and documentation standards.
  • Monitor changes in state NP scope-of-practice laws and adjust collaboration structures with Legal and Compliance.
  • Provide administrative and quality-based support for NPs in full practice authority states.
  • Develop, review, and maintain evidence-based clinical protocols and treatment guidelines across service lines.
  • Ensure protocols reflect current clinical guidelines, risk mitigation, and emerging evidence or regulatory guidance.
  • Standardize protocols across verticals where clinically appropriate while retaining vertical-specific considerations.
  • Participate in clinical review of new products, service lines, and platform features before launch.
  • Assess proposed verticals for clinical appropriateness, regulatory risk, and staffing or scope-of-practice implications.
  • Serve as a clinical subject-matter expert in cross-functional product planning.
  • Partner with the SVP of Operations on business and operational implications of new products, staffing models, and clinical capacity planning.
  • Identify and respond to clinical risk trends, including adverse events, malpractice exposure, and prescribing outliers.
  • Partner with Legal and Compliance on licensing, credentialing, and multi-state regulatory requirements.
  • Support incident investigations and corrective action plans.
  • Serve as a voting member of the Quality & Patient Safety Committee (QPSC).
  • Lead or participate in root cause analyses for adverse events, near-misses, and clinical practice issues, and ensure corrective actions are implemented and tracked to completion.
  • Promote clinical quality and patient safety through trend monitoring, peer review findings, and safety event reporting.
  • Review and approve physician timecards and payroll submissions on a recurring basis.
  • Manage physician payroll, including compensation calculations, performance-related bonus or incentive structures, and resolution of payroll discrepancies.
  • Partner with Finance and Legal on physician compensation structures, contract terms, and payroll system administration.
