About The Position

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina seeks a faculty member for the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (GPAM). This role involves outpatient adolescent medicine clinical care, leadership within the Youth Behavioral Health Hospital (YBH), and participation in YBH clinical call coverage. It is a full-time (1.0 FTE), fixed-term faculty position within the School of Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill. The effort distribution includes outpatient adolescent medicine consultative care for adolescents with diverse medical, behavioral, and psychosocial needs, delivering evidence-based services in a multidisciplinary setting, and collaborating with various healthcare professionals. For YBH clinical coverage, the role includes providing medical care and consultation for children and adolescents, managing acute and chronic medical conditions during their stay, coordinating with interdisciplinary teams, and participating in the YBH call pool. As Medical Director, the position requires physician leadership and medical oversight for YBH healthcare services, developing and maintaining clinical protocols, and collaborating with leadership on quality improvement, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and program development. The division has a strong program with board-certified specialists, nurse practitioners, and LCSWs, and offers opportunities for supervision of residents and advanced practice providers. Research opportunities are available within the division and institution, focusing on social and contextual factors, childhood adversity, and health inequities, with potential collaborations with the Gillings School of Public Health and the Sheps Center for Health Services Research. The GPAM division is large and includes Adolescent Medicine, Primary Care, Complex & Diagnostic Care, and Child Abuse pediatrics, with a strong research program and a history of teaching excellence. Requirements

  • MD or DO degree.
  • Board certification in General Pediatrics or Adolescent Medicine.
  • Experience in adolescent medicine clinical care.
  • Experience in medical leadership and oversight.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining clinical protocols.
  • Expertise in supervising medical residents and advanced practice providers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultative care for adolescents with a wide range of medical, behavioral, and psychosocial needs in an outpatient setting.
  • Deliver evidence-based adolescent health services within a multidisciplinary, team-based care environment.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and behavioral health professionals to support high-quality patient care.
  • Provide medical care and consultation for children and adolescents receiving services at the Youth Behavioral Health Hospital.
  • Evaluate and manage acute and chronic medical conditions that arise during their stay at YBH.
  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary care teams to support patients’ overall health needs and ensure appropriate medical follow-up.
  • Participate in the YBH call pool to address urgent medical concerns and provide clinical guidance related to patient care.
  • Provide physician leadership and medical oversight for healthcare services delivered within the Youth Behavioral Health Hospital.
  • Develop and maintain clinical protocols and processes related to the assessment and management of patients’ medical needs.
  • Collaborate with operational and clinical leadership to support quality improvement, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and program development.
  • Supervise medical residents and advanced practice providers.
