About The Position

Reporting to the Physician Assistant Program Director, the Medical Director is a 0.2 FTE, 12-month, non-tenured faculty position that combines faculty and administrative responsibilities to support the efficient operation of the Physician Assistant (PA) Program. The Medical Director is an advocate for the PA program through active participation in the program and support of the development and review of the program curriculum and competencies to meet current practice standards as they relate to the PA role.

Requirements

  • If the candidate is a PA, they must be a graduate of an accredited PA Program with master's degree or higher in a related discipline.
  • If the candidate is a PA, they possess a minimum of five years of clinical practice as a PA and hold a current or emeritus NCCPA certification as a PA and a current or previous state medical board license.
  • If the candidate is a physician, they must be a graduate of an accredited Doctor of Osteopathic or Medical Doctor program.
  • If the candidate is a physician, they possess a minimum of five years of clinical practice experience as a physician and currently or previously board certified.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of ARC-PA standards and compliance with previous experience in an ARC-PA accredited program.
  • Collaborative approach to education and clinical medicine.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students, staff, faculty, health care professionals, and the public.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and instructional technology.
  • Sensitivity to the expectations of students, staff, faculty, health care professionals, and the public.
  • Sensitivity to diversity and multi-cultural issues.
  • Demonstrate ability to work as a member of a team of highly motivated individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Advise on medical curriculum design, review, and continuous improvement
  • Ensure integration of current clinical guidelines and best practices
  • Support ARC-PA accreditation standards and participate in program review processes
  • Collaborate with the Program Director and faculty on academic policies and student progression
  • Assist in recruitment, mentoring, and evaluation of instructional and clinical faculty
  • Actively solicit the support of the local medical community, including but not limited to clinical preceptor sites and didactic instruction.
  • Promote interprofessional education and clinical partnerships
  • Provide input on student assessment, professionalism, and clinical readiness
  • Assist in the recruitment of students with the Program Director, Program Coordinator and the PA Admissions Committee.
  • Serve as course coordinator or co-coordinator in both didactic and clinical curriculum courses as determined by the Program Director and completes all required program documents.
  • Participate and assist with the student interview, application, and selection process.
  • Serve as ad hoc member for PA Program committees as requested or designated.
  • Maintain appropriate student and administrative records.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and revising as necessary the mission statement, goals and competencies of the PA Program.
  • Assist with the development, enhancement, and assessment of program
  • Assist in the recruiting, development, and maintenance of instructional faculty, clinical sites, and preceptors as needed and designated by the Program Director.
  • Assist with the continuous ongoing program analysis of data necessary for self-study, accreditation, and quality improvement.
  • Understand and apply ARC-PA standards as they relate to the instruction of curriculum in the PA Program.
  • Represent the ODU PA Program with professionalism through contacts with faculty, students, and community health partners.
  • Participate in local, state, or national organizations to ensure program excellence and appropriateness of the curriculum and instruction.
  • Participate in scholarly activities to ensure personal growth.
  • Attend faculty meetings as scheduled.
  • Perform other appropriate administrative duties as assigned by the Program Director.
  • Attend program events including but not limited to OSCEs, GAP labs, summative testing, program retreats, orientation, White Coat, Graduation, alumni events, etc.
  • Assist with student orientation and communications as deemed appropriate throughout the program.
  • Identify and support student scholarship and professional development as appropriate.
  • Assist in advising and mentoring of students and development of individualized learning plans and remediation processes utilized throughout the curriculum.
  • Assist in ongoing tracking of student progress, identifies and advises students in regard to strengths and weaknesses, makes appropriate recommendations of At-Risk students, and participates in the PA Progress and Promotion Committee as deemed necessary by the Program Director.
  • Aid students as necessary, in the coordination of professional activities such as resume development, interview and other professional activities.
  • Track and maintain current student files as outlined by the program.
  • Assist students and graduates with new hire onboarding and references as necessary.
  • Perform other appropriate student-related duties as assigned by the Program Director.
  • Participates in teaching responsibilities relevant to area of expertise and as assigned throughout the program.
  • Assist in development and administration of appropriate course assessments, summative evaluations, and practical exams as appropriate during the didactic phase, and assist as needed for students in clinical phase of program.
  • Participate in the curricular mapping of course and program learning outcomes, program competencies, NCCPA Content and Task Area Blueprint, PA professional competencies, and ARC PA standards.
  • Assist in formulating appropriate curricular modifications based on student and program performance and outcome data.
  • Complete required documentation and assessment items for written or practical examinations, courses, faculty, program, and curricular assessment.
  • Perform other appropriate instruction and curricular related duties as assigned by the Program Director.
