About The Position

The Medical Director APP Perinatal Operations/Lead Certified Nurse Midwife provides clinical and administrative APP leadership for women’s health services and programs. The role serves as a liaison between CNM delivering providers, OB triage APPs, the service line, and hospital operational leaders. It leads and improves APP clinical activities across perinatal units and supports consistent care in practices that use APPs for perinatal services. The role oversees evidence-based care processes for inpatient and ambulatory obstetrical patients, following professional society guidelines, MIEMMS standards, and LHAAMC Women’s and Children’s protocols and policies. It supports access to ambulatory midwifery care and appropriate staffing and processes for efficient perinatal throughput. The leader models quality care across ambulatory and inpatient settings, including general OB/Gyn practices, Centering Pregnancy, perinatal units, and OB triage; supports process improvement and patient experience; and ensures APP care is within scope and professional practice agreements are current.

Requirements

Board certified.
At least 5 years of Obstetrics and Gynecology practice experience.
Demonstrated leadership competencies.
Follow applicable professional society guidelines.
Ability to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
Reasonable expectation of exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

Responsibilities

Attend and participate in OB Hospitalists meetings, Women’s and Children’s executive leadership meetings, monthly chair 1:1 meetings, monthly APP/CNM practice meetings, service-line meetings, medical staff meetings, the annual leadership retreat, and strategic planning meetings.
Orient, onboard, and educate new APPs for inpatient work and ensure onboarding of ambulatory APP providers across LHOB/Gyn practices.
Review and educate APPs, including CNMs, about practice financials, billing, coding, collecting, and documentation changes.
Partner with OB/Gyn hospitalists as a safety officer for perinatal units, primarily OB triage, and potentially serve as a clinical consultant for the ED and medicine service across Luminis Health.
Participate in APP, resident, and medical student education as defined by the residency program director.
Develop and resolve CNM and APP OB triage clinical and call schedules.
Serve as the first point of communication for APPs who provide perinatal services.
Execute and enforce quality protocols developed by Women’s and Children’s Leadership.
Promote throughput across all perinatal units in conjunction with the Perinatal Operations Medical Director and OB/Gyn Hospitalists.
Execute quality improvement projects with guidance from the PI team and VP of Women’s and Children’s.
Enforce weekly service-line meetings, TEAM STEPPS, Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification, and simulation attendance.
Participate in succession planning for APP leaders and practice members with the Women’s and Children’s System Chair.
Participate in Focused Professional Practice Evaluations and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations with the OB/Gyn Chief of Service and Associate Chair for Quality and Safety.
Participate in leadership evaluation and program feedback twice yearly.
Model quality care across ambulatory and inpatient settings and participate in process improvement initiatives that advance patient experience, consistency of care, and timely, appropriate documentation.
Ensure APP care is within scope and up-to-date professional practice agreements are in place.
