About The Position

Mercy Urgent Care, Western North Carolina's only nonprofit urgent care network, is excited to welcome an experienced Medical Coding & Credentialing Specialist to join our team in Asheville, NC. This role supports accurate coding, compliant billing, and timely provider credentialing across our urgent care and occupational health services.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 3-5 years of medical coding experience, preferrable in urgent care, outpatient, or ambulatory care
  • Current coding certification (CPC, CCS, or CCS-P required)
  • Proficiency with EHRs, practice management systems, coding software, and Microsoft Office

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in Health Information Management, Health Information Technology, or related field preferred
  • Additional credentials such as CPMA, CPCS, or CPCO preferred
  • Experience with provider credentialing, payer enrollment, and compliance auditing strongly preferred
  • Athenahealth experience a plus
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Review clinical documentation and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes in line with current guidelines and payer requirements
  • Ensure accurate charge capture, appropriate modifier use, and timely resolution of coding edits, denials, and documentation issues
  • Perform coding and documentation audits, identify trends, and support provider education on documentation and compliance
  • Manage all aspects of provider credentialing and recredentialing with commercial, governmental, and occupational medicine payers
  • Complete and track enrollment applications, CAQH updates, payer portal records, and revalidation to avoid disruptions in participation or reimbursement
  • Collaborate with providers, clinical teams, and billing staff to support a compliant, efficient revenue cycle
