About The Position

This position is responsible for assigning ICD 9 CM Codes for diagnoses and using CPT codes for procedures. The Medical Coder will code various work lists including Radiology, Cardiology, Respiratory/Sleep Labs, Physical Therapy, Infusion Center, Recurring Labs, Outpatient OB/GYN NST’s, all un-coded outpatient records, Laboratory, and all un-coded records. The role also involves reviewing charts in EBEW Lists to determine and correct errors, reviewing patient charts for Medical Necessity, contacting physicians and their offices for missing information or clarification, and assisting in training new and remote personnel. The Medical Coder will participate in educational programs, maintain active status with AAPC, attend required meetings, and perform other duties as assigned, including Emergency Department coding with SymMetrics and printing the Emergency Department Log.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • Additional Certification in the Coding field required
  • Past experience coding with ICD 9 CM Coding system, preferably in a hospital setting, is required
  • Knowledge of the ICD 10 coding system, medical terminology, pathology, anatomy and physiology and pharmacology is an asset
  • Computer, printer, FAX machine, and photocopier
  • Must be able to sit at desk for long periods of time while focusing on proper coding of medical diagnoses
  • Must be able to lift light loads such as stacks of medical records (25 pounds)
  • Must have the ability to see and read medical records, coding books, computer screens, computer generated reports, and all other tools used in the performance of the job
  • Must have the ability to receive and understand telephone calls, i.e. doctors, insurance companies, etc.
  • Must be able to speak clearly and verbally communicate with doctors, insurance companies, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the ICD 10 coding system, medical terminology, pathology, anatomy and physiology and pharmacology is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Assign ICD 9 CM Codes for diagnosis
  • Code Radiology, Cardiology, Respiratory/Sleep Labs, Physical Therapy, Infusion Center, Recurring Labs, Outpatient OB/GYN NST’s, All Un-coded Outpatient records, Laboratory, and All Un-coded Records
  • Code Using CPT codes for Procedures in Orthopedics and Non-Stress Tests in OB/GYN
  • Review charts in the EBEW Lists to Determine the Reason for the Error and Correct the Error
  • Review patient charts regarding Medical Necessity forwarded from Patient Accounts and Document Correct Codes
  • Contact Physicians regarding missing Orders or Diagnoses
  • Contact the Physician’s Offices to Request Additional Information regarding a Medical Necessity Error
  • Assist in Training New Personnel in Coding
  • Assist in the Training of the Remote Coders
  • Participate in Educational Programs and In-services
  • Retain Active Status with AAPC
  • Attend Meetings as Required
  • Perform Other Duties as Assigned
  • Work with SymMetrics for Emergency Department Coding
  • Print Emergency Department Log for the previous day
  • Any other duties assigned (Ex. Patient Accounts/Billing)
