About The Position

This is a full-time, 32-hour position, working 4 days a week, supporting Physician Practices. It is an hourly, non-exempt, union position. The role provides medical assisting to medical providers and clinical support to the office manager. Key expectations include accuracy, organizational skills, independence, excellent verbal and written communication, computer proficiency, sound judgment, and a strong customer service approach.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program.
  • If not nationally certified (AMT, RMA, NCMA or CCMA), must obtain Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) within 6 months of hire.
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews patients and obtains demographic and insurance information accurately.
  • Verifies insurance eligibility and collects patient co-pays according to the Collection policy.
  • Attempts collection from self-pay patients and refers them to the financial counselor for charity care assessment.
  • Maintains an error rate of 5% or less over a 90-day average and completes day-end review before ending shift.
  • Greets and escorts patients to exam rooms, obtains vital signs and weight, and records chief complaint.
  • Reviews medication lists, allergies, and updates family, social, past medical, and surgical history.
  • Informs providers of patient's meaningful use needs (e.g., mammogram, eye exam).
  • Assists providers in examinations and with immunizations.
  • Gives instructions to patients as directed by the provider.
  • Ensures cleanliness of exam rooms after patient visits and practices Standard Precautions.
  • Provides telephone support using appropriate techniques.
  • Receives and processes messages accurately and promptly, screening urgent calls and keeping providers informed.
  • Maintains clinic supplies, reorders, and stocks them.
  • Ensures supplies and medications are stored according to practice standards and checks for outdates.
  • Transports instruments in a Biohazard container for reprocessing.
  • Notifies the secretary of diagnostic studies and referrals as requested by the provider.
  • Assists the secretary with scheduling knowledge if necessary.
  • Maintains clinical patient records and reviews patient records before scheduled visits.
  • Participates in prescription renewals for patients.
  • Participates in gathering data for quality measures.
  • Ensures all equipment is in proper working order and included in the Preventative Maintenance Program.
  • Annually participates in policy and procedure review of the practice and proposes changes as needed.
  • Actively participates in the Hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program, supports and implements Department-specific Quality Improvement initiatives and projects, recommends process improvement, and reports quality issues.
  • Participates in emergency/disaster preparedness planning and drills, and is expected to participate in the Hospital’s response to a real-life disaster/emergency event within the scope of professional and personal ability.
