About The Position

This position provides assistive care to patients, facilitating the efficient delivery of patient care and supporting licensed staff. The incumbent provides basic healthcare assistance, supports professional roles, and may assist with clerical functions as a multi-skilled auxiliary worker. This position provides direct patient care and may administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law. The University of Utah is a Level 1 Trauma Center, nationally ranked for academic research, quality standards, and patient experience, with five hospitals and eleven clinics.

Requirements

Verifiable completion of one (1) of the following: State approved EMT course, One (1) year of Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or other healthcare setting, Medical Assisting education program, or University Hospital Medical Assistant certification program.
Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 30 days of hire).
Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.
Demonstrated proficiency in the specific clinic's specialty skills within six weeks of hire (specialty skills may not be performed until after basic competency testing is completed).
Ability to withstand the physical demand of being on your feet for long periods, moving and lifting patients, and reaching for and handling equipment.

Responsibilities

Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures by recording temperatures, pulse rate, blood pressure, and responses to medical history questions.
Reports observed patient concerns and changes in condition to licensed staff.
Performs CLIA-waived lab tests and reports results.
Performs skills such as suture removal, straight catheterization, and injections (IM, Subq, intra-dermal).
Acts as a chaperone for healthcare providers during patient examinations and assists with procedures.
Monitors and cleans patient examination rooms, unit areas, and equipment, reporting outdated supplies, stock levels, and necessary equipment repairs.
Answers telephones, forwards messages, and schedules appointments, procedures, and diagnostic tests under the direction of licensed staff.
Assists with routine clerical functions such as filing medical information, compiling charts, obtaining medical records, and entering charges for billing.
Attends and completes mandatory education including infection prevention and control, safety, CPR, equipment usage, and procedures.
May perform patient phlebotomy after specialized training.
May apply leads and monitors for diagnostic procedures like EKG and ultrasound under supervision.
May assist with patient and family education by providing educational materials and general health information.
May assist with the transportation of patients to ancillary departments or inpatient units.
May instruct in Basic Life Support (BLS) requirements.
May perform IV access.
May perform other duties based on department needs.
Required to work rotating schedules, including variable hours, weekends, nights, and holidays, to meet staffing and patient care demands in a 24/7 health system.
Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance during assigned shifts is essential.
