About The Position

This position is contingent on contract award. The Medical Assistant supports on-site health services by performing assigned clinical and documentation functions within state-authorized scope, facility protocols, and the direction of licensed health care practitioners. The role supports patient arrival screening, routine point-of-care testing, vaccinations, daily health service request processing, electronic health record documentation, infection prevention, emergency response readiness, continuity-of-care documentation, and language-access and privacy requirements. The position must help the service provider meet contract requirements for timely, culturally competent, trauma-informed, and community-standard health care services.

Requirements

  • Active, unrestricted certification as a Medical Assistant is preferred. Certified by one of the following:
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA),
  • Registered Medical Assistant by the American Society of Medical Technologists (AMT),
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by the National Health Career Association (NHA),
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), or
  • National Registered title of Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) by the National Health Association for Health Professionals.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Employees shall have at least one year of general experience that demonstrates the following:
  • The ability to greet and deal tactfully with the public.
  • Capability of understanding and applying written and verbal orders, rules, and regulations. All personnel shall be literate and be able to interpret printed rules and regulations, detailed written orders, training instructions and materials, and must be able to compose reports.
  • Good judgment, courage, alertness, an even temperament, and render satisfactory performance through knowledge of his/her position responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain poise and self-control during situations that involve mental stress, such as fires, explosions, civil disturbances, and building evacuations.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to deliver culturally competent and trauma-informed support to a diverse patient population.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive health information.
  • Ability to work within written procedures, emergency plans, and accountability systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, licensed practitioners, and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Ability to support language access and disability accommodation processes using approved services.
  • Required to walk unaided at a normal pace for up to 5 minutes and maintain balance.
  • Required to jog/fast walk up to ¼ mile.
  • Requires physical exertion such as lifting objects greater than 30 pounds.
  • Required to perform CPR/emergency care standing or kneeling.
  • Must have the ability to assist sick, injured, or aging patients or staff exiting the building (may require lifting, dragging, wheeling, or carrying someone who weighs significantly more than self).
  • Must be able to see, hear and smell with aids if necessary.
  • Must be able to lift, push, or carry 30 pounds.
  • Must perform the duties of my job in a stressful and often austere environment without physical limitations.
  • Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Average manual dexterity for computer operation.
  • Phone or computer use for extended periods of time.
  • Must maintain current/physical residency in the continental U.S.
  • Pass a medical examination conducted by a licensed physician within 30 days prior to initial assignment.
  • U.S. citizen and have resided in the U.S. for the last five years (unless abroad on official U.S. government duty).
  • Successfully engage in and complete a thorough Background Investigation.
  • Poses or have ability to obtain required security clearances.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a detention, correctional or residential healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support initial medical screening within 12 hours of patient arrival, including collection and recording of health history and current health status as assigned.
  • Obtain and document height, weight, and a complete set of vital signs during intake screening and obtain blood sugar and pulse oximetry readings when indicated and authorized.
  • Support required screening activities during intake, including tuberculosis screening workflows, pregnancy screening workflows, and other infectious disease screening processes required by the facility.
  • Perform assigned routine on-site laboratory and point-of-care testing within authorized scope and facility protocol, including Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-waived testing required at the facility.
  • Perform assigned point-of-care services that support contract-required health services, which may include urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring, pregnancy testing, rapid streptococcal testing, rapid influenza testing, rapid coronavirus disease 2019 testing, and other approved point-of-care tests within scope and competency.
  • Support preventive care activities, including immunization workflows and patient education and counseling support, as delegated and within scope.
  • Support routine electrocardiogram acquisition and other basic clinical support functions required for on-site health services, as assigned and within scope.
  • Solicit, receive, and help triage daily patient requests for health care in accordance with facility workflow, and ensure those requests are tracked through a written system of accountability and within the health record.
  • Document assigned care, screening, testing, and follow-up activities accurately and timely in the electronic health record and other required records.
  • Support continuity of care for patient transfers, releases, or removals by assisting with record handling, medication continuity workflows, and other assigned documentation processes.
  • Protect the confidentiality of patient information and comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements, the Privacy Act, facility privacy requirements, and all information-security procedures.
  • Follow procedures to identify, document, and report unauthorized access or attempted access to sensitive information and escalate security incidents immediately in accordance with contract procedures.
  • Support infectious disease prevention, standard precautions, isolation, co-horting, and quarantine procedures as directed by licensed staff and current public health guidance.
  • Respond to health-related emergencies within training and scope, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator use, emergency first aid, and obtaining emergency medical assistance.
  • Participate in emergency response, evacuation, fire, life-safety, and other required drills and training for medical staff.
  • Provide culturally competent, trauma-informed care and support effective communication with patients of varied languages, cultures, and communication needs.
  • Use professional in-person, telephonic, video, sign-language, or other approved language and accommodation resources when needed to support effective patient communication.
  • Perform other contract-aligned duties within authorized scope that are necessary to support on-site health services, patient safety, documentation integrity, and operational readiness.
  • Complete required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.
