The Medical Assistant performs basic direct patient care activities, such as lab tests, treatments, and medication/immunization administration, under the direction of the Nurse and/or physician. This role prepares patients for examination and treatment, and carries out clerical, quality control, and performance improvement activities in support of the physician practice. The incumbent also serves as a resource for clerical/clinical staff. Key functions include delivering direct and indirect patient care, collecting patient healthcare data, completing ordered treatments and testing, ensuring documentation accuracy, preparing patients for procedures, communicating with physicians/nurses about patient status, performing clerical duties, answering phones, verifying patient information and entering it into the billing system, accurately entering codes and charges, completing patient care forms, ensuring patient safety, labeling specimens, adhering to infection control processes, assisting with survey readiness, performing quality control, practicing National Patient Safety Goals, scheduling surgery/procedures/testing, providing exit counseling and education, preparing exam rooms, stocking supplies, and providing pre/post-examination education and counseling.
