The Medical Assistant performs basic direct patient care activities, such as lab tests, treatments, and medication/immunization administration, under the direction of the Nurse and/or physician. They prepare patients for examinations and treatments, and carry out clerical duties, quality control, and performance improvement initiatives in support of the physician practice. This position also serves as a resource for clerical and clinical staff. Key responsibilities include delivering patient care, collecting patient healthcare data, completing treatments and testing, preparing patients for examinations, and communicating pertinent information to the physician or nurse. The role involves performing clerical functions such as answering phones, verifying patient information, entering codes and charges into the billing system, and completing necessary forms. Patient safety, infection control, and adherence to National Patient Safety Goals are paramount. The Medical Assistant may also be responsible for scheduling surgeries, procedures, and testing, providing exit counseling, preparing charts, performing control studies, conducting phlebotomy, stocking supplies, and providing pre and post-examination education.
