About The Position

The Medical Assistant supports Radiation Oncologists, Registered Nurses, and other Cancer Center staff with clinical and office functions to coordinate oncology patient care. The role works closely with the nursing team and medical staff to help provide quality care in a timely manner. Duties include preparing patients and charts for visits, providing clinical support, coordinating appointments and follow-up, and maintaining exam and HDR rooms. The position provides direct clinical coverage at the outreach radiation oncology clinic in Lapeer and serves as a backup for the Owosso clinic as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduation from an approved Medical Assistant program or one year of experience as a medical assistant.
• BLS certification.

Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with registered nurses and radiation oncologists in delivering patient care.
• Obtain histories of patient complaints, prepare patients for examinations, and take vital signs.
• Review charts weekly for patients scheduled for consults and follow-up appointments; chart reviews take place Fridays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Schedule patient appointments for X-ray, MRI, PET, and simulation; register patients, triage phone calls, file documents, and bill for clinic services in the IMPAC system.
• Provide direct clinical coverage for the outreach radiation oncology clinic in Lapeer and back up the Owosso clinic as needed.
• Prepare materials for clinic operations and coordinate associated follow-up activities, including scheduling tests.
• Collaborate with staff to ensure continuity of care.
• Administer ethyol and lupron injections; narcotic injections are not included.
• Draw patient blood and obtain results for the medical record.
• Prepare patients for procedures, including pelvic exams and bronchoscopies, and assist providers as needed.
• Clean and stock exam rooms and the HDR room daily.
