About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Office Manager, the Medical Assistant provides a variety of patient care activities and accommodative services for assigned patients. In collaboration with licensed staff, the Medical Assistant organizes patient care and general unit activities to accomplish required functions. They provide an appropriate environment for the provision of nursing care by maintaining the patient room or area in an orderly manner and assisting in maintaining the neatness of the work environment. The Medical Assistant performs designated patient care to assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse according to physicians’ orders and in conformance with approved patient care standards. They perform medical assistant skills according to established standards of care and apply principles of infection control in the provision of patient care activities. The Medical Assistant adapts patient care activities to meet the needs of the adult and elderly patient/family with a focus on special precautions to minimize the potential for patient injury. They utilize equipment in the provision of patient care services safely and effectively, adapting equipment usage to the age and general condition of the patient as indicated. Accurate reporting of changes in patients’ conditions to the licensed nurse is essential. The Medical Assistant maintains a professional level of conduct on the wound care unit at all times, facilitates communication with patients, families, physicians, nursing personnel, and personnel from other Hospital departments, and utilizes lines of accountability appropriately when errors are identified. They participate in in-service programs and other self-directed learning activities to promote wound care practice and actively participate in the Unit performance improvement activities. Consistently providing outstanding service to all patients, physicians, fellow employees, and guests according to position responsibilities, displaying initiative to see processes to completion, and offering assistance without being asked are key aspects of this role. Responding to requests in a timely manner, actively participating in department committees and group meetings with a focus on providing input to improve the quality of services, and consistently demonstrating behavior that reflects that working as a team is more important than self-interest are also crucial. The role requires demonstrating interpersonal competencies such as problem-solving, negotiation, and conflict management to improve teamwork. Consistently maintaining a professional level of conduct, facilitating communication with patients, physicians, guests, and co-workers as appropriate, and consistently demonstrating courteous and positive behaviors (e.g., smile, pleasant tone, good eye contact) are expected. Protecting the confidentiality of patients/co-workers and respecting their dignity, privacy, and differences, as well as showing respect for wound care property and the property of others, are also important.

Requirements

High School graduate or equivalent with documented competency in providing basic nursing care in accordance with competency inventory.
Current certification as a Medical Assistant in the State of California.
Current verification of competency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation to include pediatric resuscitation.
Previous experience in hospital/nursing home patient care setting preferred.
