The Medical Assistant provides administrative and clinical support to clinics, working independently and collaboratively while treating colleagues with respect and consideration. Duties may vary based on office location and department structure. The role supports patient visits, clinic operations, and physicians, and collaborates with registered and licensed practical nurses to provide high-quality patient care. Administrative work includes answering calls and responding to patient requests, scheduling and rescheduling appointments, contacting patients who miss appointments, preparing new-patient charts, distributing records, maintaining accurate medical information, processing referrals, checking out and discharging patients, and collecting copayments. The Medical Assistant also schedules procedures and diagnostic testing in the EMR and obtains insurance authorizations. Clinical duties include preparing and maintaining examination rooms, greeting and escorting patients, preparing patients for appointments, documenting medications brought to visits, verifying medical histories, taking and recording vital signs in the EMR, and assisting physicians with office procedures that do not require medication administration. The role also maintains supplies and a clean, effective work area and follows OSHA requirements, including completing required training and in-services. The position operates in a professional office environment and uses standard office equipment. Travel is primarily local during the business day; travel to other clinics is required as needed, and some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
