About The Position

The Medical Assistant facilitates communication between the patient and the provider during patient care. This role is responsible for preparing the patient for their visit, which includes rooming patients, obtaining and documenting vital signs, reviewing intake paperwork, pulling up radiology images, removing dressings, procedure set-up, and injection prep. The Medical Assistant will also be responsible for accurate data entry into the EMR, completing tasks associated with company initiatives, and maintaining exam room standards. This includes restocking and cleaning exam rooms and tables, and monitoring biohazard and sharps containers. The Medical Assistant will assist the provider in preparing patient prescriptions and completing medical and patient forms, such as work release and FMLA. They will retrieve and respond to voicemails within 24 business hours, prepare patient electronic charts for clinic visits, and ensure all outstanding testing results are in the EMR. The role also involves scanning clinical documents into the EMR, printing clinic schedules, and ensuring patients receive education as indicated by the provider. The Medical Assistant will manage the EMR desktops of assigned providers, act as a PTO Buddy, and create and promote a positive patient experience while maintaining a HIPAA-compliant environment and a clean workspace.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED, and graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant training program as defined by state regulations.
  • Employee must pass the MA competency exam within the first six months of employment.
  • Active Medical Assistant certification such as Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) with proof of current membership from American Medical Technologists (AMT) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with proof of current membership from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with proof of current membership from National Health Career Association (NHA) (Test administered after 7/1/2017 only) or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) with proof of current membership from National Certified Competency Testing (NCCT), or per State regulations.
  • Experience with office medical procedures and treatments and knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, EMR and scheduling software.
  • Certification or additional training must meet the requirements for meaningful use.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Knowledge of the health care field.
  • General knowledge of patient care in a clinic.
  • Knowledge of back office skills.
  • Knowledge of patient confidentiality, state laws, HIPAA regulations, and medical records procedures.
  • Requires strong computer skills, including the ability to work with medical software.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-2 years of experience in orthopedics, spine surgery, or pain management is preferred.
  • In lieu of experience must have the following training and/or experience: Graduated from a formal training program during the last 12-18 months, and have the CMA certificate; OR, Is grandfathered in as defined by State regulation.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates communication between the patient and the provider during patient care.
  • Prepares the patient for visit with the provider, including rooming patients, obtaining and documenting vitals, reviewing intake paperwork, pulling up radiology images, removing dressings, procedure set-up, and injection prep.
  • Completes tasks associated with Company initiatives such as PROs, Quality Payment Programs, etc.
  • Maintains exam room standards, including restocking and cleaning rooms and tables.
  • Monitors biohazard and sharps containers and replaces them as needed.
  • Assists the provider in preparing patient prescriptions and completing medical and patient forms (i.e. work release, FMLA, etc.).
  • Retrieves and responds to voicemails within 24 business hours and documents actions in EMR.
  • Prepares patient electronic charts for clinic visits before the date of service.
  • Verifies any outstanding testing results are in EMR, confirms the appropriateness of the patient to the provider (body part and/or insurance), and notes imaging, DME, or casting needed prior to provider visit on the date of service.
  • Scans clinical documents into EMR.
  • Prints clinic schedules on the morning of the date of service.
  • Ensures patient receives education as indicated by the provider.
  • Manages EMR desktops of assigned providers in a timely manner.
  • Acts as PTO Buddy per clinic plan.
  • Creates and promotes a positive patient experience.
  • Maintains HIPAA compliant environment.
  • Maintains clean workspace.
