Brattleboro Memorial Hospital (BMH), in partnership with the Community College of Vermont (CCV), is launching its scholarship program to train individuals to become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). As a medical assistant, you will provide foundational support to clinicians at BMH. Responsibilities include greeting and rooming of patients, collecting and documenting patient medical histories, and working with and supporting the healthcare team to assure a smooth and efficient patient flow. All BMH medical assistants receive support and ongoing education to maintain the skills required to provide high-quality patient care for the community we serve. Applicants who are accepted into this scholarship program will attend classes at CCV's Brattleboro campus. Applicants will work 16 hours a week gaining on-the-job experience by shadowing and working beside trained medical assistants in a BMH Medical Group practice. Accepted applicants will receive full college tuition paid by BMH. Participants will also earn ($18.60 per hour) for the on-the-job training hours worked at the hospital. Clinics are typically open Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm and closed on weekends and holidays. Upon successful completion of the classroom requirements (3 months), you will be awarded a full-time medical assistant position at BMH with full benefits. In addition, your training will continue until such time as you are able to study for and pass your exam to become a certified medical assistant. Upon earning CMA status, wages will increase to $21.09/hr. The Medical Assistant (MA) functions under the direct supervision and authority of the physician/NP/PA/CMN and reports to the practice manager. The MA must demonstrate competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care, communicate effectively with others, maintain an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies, work with the healthcare team to assure smooth and efficient patient flow, and organize the office environment to assure patient safety. The BMH Physician Group practices provide medical services in various specialties and offices including pediatrics, ob/gyn, cardiology, orthopedics, internal medicine, family practice, ENT, urology and general surgery. The practices are staffed by physicians and other licensed providers who are supported by clinical staff (LPNs or medical assistants) and clerical staff. Hours vary by practice.
