About The Position

The Medical Assistant will perform a combination of duties under the direction of a provider, including screening patients for medical histories, recording vital signs and EKGs, and preparing patients for examinations. Responsibilities also include scheduling follow-up appointments, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing phlebotomy, ensuring proper disposal of contaminated supplies, preparing instruments for sterilization, stocking examination rooms, and ordering supplies. The role involves maintaining communication with health agencies for immunization and communicable disease reporting, moving equipment as needed, operating equipment, preparing patient medical records (charts and EMRs), gathering patient information and complaints, performing various tests, logging laboratory and radiology results, completing forms for medical, physical, disability, and school purposes, tracking inventory, interviewing patients, ensuring charts are prepared for providers, assisting with patient flow, escorting patients and specimens, setting up examination rooms, distributing educational materials, assisting with prescription refill authorizations, and recalling or rescheduling patients. Additional duties include tracking refrigerator/freezer temperatures and performing other required tasks.

Requirements

  • Minimum formal education of High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year job-related experience
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to read, write and speak English

Responsibilities

  • Screen all patients for medical histories
  • Record vital signs, EKG
  • Record X-Ray and/or Sonogram in patient medical record charts
  • Prepare patient for examination
  • Assist the provider as necessary during the examination
  • Schedule patients for follow-up appointments
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Perform phlebotomy
  • Ensure the appropriate disposal of contaminated supplies
  • Prepare instruments for sterilization
  • Stock examination rooms
  • Order supplies as necessary
  • Maintain communication with various health agencies for immunization reporting, communicable diseases, etc.
  • Move equipment when or where necessary
  • Operate equipment and perform EKG as indicated
  • Prepare patient medical record (chart) and/or EMR with appropriate intake sheets
  • Gather information, complaints, take vital signs, perform various tests as ordered
  • Log in patient medical record and/or EMR Laboratory and Radiology results
  • Perform directives as requested by physicians
  • Complete various forms for Medical, Physical, Disability, and Schools
  • Track inventory for supplies, vaccines, etc.
  • Interview patient
  • Ensure chart is available, with relevant lab work and test reports if indicated, for the provider
  • Assist with maintaining patient flow to and from exam rooms and treatment areas
  • Assist in escorting patients and specimens throughout the facility
  • Set up examination rooms for various primary and specialty care physicians
  • Distribute appropriate educational material to patient as directed
  • Assist in the authorization of prescription refills as directed by the physician
  • Recall or reschedule patients as instructed
  • Secure and ensure confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Communicate effectively and maintain patient records, files, reports, and other correspondence
  • Perform intake of patient medical history prior to provider examination
  • Complete time out form
  • Perform point of care testing including nasal and throat swab
  • Update CIR
  • Perform STD reporting
  • Track temperature in refrigerator/freezer and complete appropriate forms
  • Perform other duties as required
