About The Position

This is a full-time Medical Assistant position in the Immediate Care department at Advocate Sherman Hospital. The role involves providing clinical support, ensuring patient flow, performing various tests and procedures, assisting with patient education and referrals, and maintaining accurate medical records. The Medical Assistant will also play a role in patient-centered care, adhering to service standards, and maintaining a professional image. Confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and OSHA standards are critical. The position also involves contributing to financial goals through accurate charge capture and responsible resource management. The role requires keeping abreast of current standards of care and participating in professional development opportunities.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a medical assistant program or successful completion of the certification/registration exam.
  • Good communications skills.
  • Experience using a keyboard and computers.
  • Familiarity with equipment used in ambulatory care.
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification/Registration.
  • Current CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Handles patient flow and other duties as assigned as identified by the Advocate Outpatient Centers standards and protocols.
  • Performs various tests/procedures independently in accordance with certification and scope of care.
  • Participates in patient education and care instructions.
  • Assists patients in obtaining services and setting up referrals as ordered by provider.
  • Anticipates the need for and completes all documentation necessary to ensure quality care based on policy and procedure, including vital signs, immunizations/medications history, and chief complaint.
  • Participates (as needed) in maintaining site quality control logs in accordance with standards for maintaining CLIA certification.
  • Accurately participates in maintaining the lab tracking log.
  • Responsible for accurate specimen collection including patient identification and labeling based on laboratory collection procedures.
  • Communicates with physicians, associates or other ancillary staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Participates in “mock emergency” drills.
  • Knows where emergency equipment is located.
  • Ability to accurately measure and record: blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, weight; records reason for visit as appropriate; and past history and obtains consent if applicable.
  • Documents according to policy and procedure in medical record all patient communications.
  • Takes an active role in achieving Advocate Clinical Integration goals by medical record preparation, i.e. assures appropriate flow sheets and charts are available. Accurate data is obtained and documented.
  • Consistently demonstrates sincere understanding and empathy in interactions with patients.
  • Consistently adheres to Advocate Health service standards and MVP.
  • In collaboration with team, meets or exceeds established patient satisfaction targets.
  • Treats patients, families and associates with respect and incorporates cultural differences into interactions/care.
  • Participates in activities to evaluate and improve processes that will contribute to patient, associate and physician satisfaction.
  • Responsible for conveying a professional image in compliance with Advocate Dress Code and wears Advocate provided identification tag at all times.
  • Completes all required customer service training and complies with scripting initiatives.
  • Creates and maintains an environment that is patient centered as evidenced by positive patient comments, and high satisfaction scores.
  • Promotes prompt access and is engaged in achieving visit volume targets.
  • Functions as a clinical support.
  • Attentive and responsive to the needs and concern of patients, associates and physicians and works closely to resolve issues with involved parties.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of patient care and communication in person and via the telephone.
  • Makes certain that the medical record and all relevant diagnostic reports are available.
  • Medical record release of information following HIPAA policy when involving another identified party.
  • Disposes and shreds papers containing patient identifiable information according to policy.
  • Complies with established OSHA safety and Regulatory standards.
  • Maintains work area in accordance with the facility site checklist.
  • Complies with infection control standards.
  • Participates in annual safety training and demonstrates Culture of Safety behaviors/techniques.
  • Maintains department orderliness and cleanliness.
  • Reports all non-compliance and incident occurrences and completes appropriate reporting method.
  • Quality liaison who actively participates in medical record audits and indicator development.
  • Understands order completion and documentation for appropriate charge capture and risk reduction.
  • Maintains inventory par levels using standard products, and paying attention to waste.
  • Understands productivity and supply management targets and is engaged in achieving same.
  • Promotes a green environment by adhering to organizational guidelines for recycling and prudent utilization of resources.
  • Utilizes organizational resources in a responsible/cost effective manner.
  • Keeps abreast of current standards of care.
  • Participates in in-services and other professional and growth opportunities.
  • Completes annual competency reviews.
  • Maintains MA certification/registration and membership in professional organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
