The Medical Assistant-Registered (MA-R) works under the delegation of a licensed practitioner, such as an RN, APC, or MD/DO, to perform directed duties that assist in providing patient care to assigned patients. The MA-R must demonstrate competency and perform only medical tasks listed on the current Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement, under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner as defined in RCW 18.360.010, and in accordance with RCW 18.360.050 (4). Delegated duties vary by unit or department and may include maintaining medication and immunization records; screening and following up on test results as directed; diagnostic testing and electrocardiography; waived laboratory testing under federal CLIA; administering eye drops, topical ointments, and vaccines; and administering medications or intramuscular injections within the stated authorization and supervision requirements. The MA-R is responsible for submitting an updated Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement to the Washington State Department of Health within 30 days of changes to delegated duties or practitioner supervision, and for providing Human Resources with the updated endorsement and written verification that it is accepted and active. The role also requires completion of assigned unit- or department-specific checklists and competencies.
