About The Position

The Medical Assistant/Receptionist will assist in the delivery of care in the ambulatory setting under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse or physician. This position will act as both a Medical Assistant and a Receptionist Scheduler.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification or Diploma from accredited Medical Assistant school/program OR Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or Biology with National Medical Assistant Certification required.
  • HeartSaver certification
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written English proficiency required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care in outpatient physician practice under the direction of the practicing physician, physician assistant, or licensed nurse.
  • Assist with other clinical and clerical duties to ensure optimization of patient experience within the practice.
  • Welcome patients by greeting them, in person or on the telephone; answering or referring inquiries.
  • Prepare patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; providing examination gowns and drapes; helping them to position themselves for the examination and/or treatment; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Verify patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
  • Support patient care delivery by helping health care providers during examinations; preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic laboratory tests on the premises; disposing of contaminated supplies; sterilizing medical instruments; drawing blood; preparing patients for x-rays; taking electrocardiograms; removing sutures; changing dressings.
  • Complete records by recording patient examination, treatment, and test results.
  • Schedule hospital procedures, surgeries, and tests. Precert and obtain test results.
  • Handle phone calls and messages for prescriptions, notes, forms, etc.
  • Complete disability and insurance forms.
  • Maintain clinical flow in all areas of the practice.
  • Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
  • Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs in collaboration with the Office Manager.
  • Maintain knowledge in area of medical terminology.
  • Greet and direct visitors/patients courteously and professionally.
  • Obtain, verify and/or update patient demographic information.
  • Collect co-pay and copy of the patient’s insurance identification card.
  • Assist with answering and screening calls and the triaging process of all incoming telephone calls for urgent information or services. Schedule appointments and record and forward messages as required.
  • Respond to requests for routine information or assistance within scope of knowledge and authority and refer visitors to appropriate staff members as necessary.
  • Initiate calls as requested by Physician, Office Manager or other professional staff.
  • Responsible for opening/closing office duties as needed.
  • Photocopying, faxing, and distributing documents as required and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain order of document processing area /supply closets, notifying Office Manager of the need to order supplies, ensuring all supplies are distributed upon receipt and kept in their designated areas.
  • Maintain copy machines, ensuring all supplies are on hand; call for repair when required.
  • Responsible for the management of incoming and outgoing departmental mail; dating as required, sorting, distributing, and generating responses as appropriate and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate ongoing commitment to customer service excellence and support the customer service plan.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
