About The Position

This role provides essential patient preparation and clinical support within a primary care setting. The Medical Assistant is responsible for patient-centered care, including obtaining vital signs, documenting patient information in the EHR, preparing exam rooms, and assisting medical providers with various exams and procedures. The position also involves ensuring patient safety, accurate documentation, care coordination, participating in quality improvement initiatives, maintaining the clinical environment, and demonstrating professional accountability and growth.

Requirements

  • Completion of Medical Assistant program, with evidence of training in clinic procedures and duties.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Possesses basic knowledge and skill appropriate to education/training.
  • Telephone and computer skills.
  • Flexible in accepting work assignments.
  • Possesses the ability to seek and utilize supervision appropriately.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse patient population.
  • Professional interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to function as a committed and reliable team member.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds frequently in the performance of essential job duties (e.g., moving supplies, equipment, and assisting with patient care tasks).
  • Full-time or Part-time Flexible and varied hours.
  • Consistent attendance is required.
  • May require limited travel within service area.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients in a respectful, patient-centered manner.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, height, weight, and required intake information in the EHR.
  • Determine and document reason for visit and update histories appropriately.
  • Perform medication reconciliation per protocol.
  • Prepare exam rooms, equipment, and supplies prior to provider entry.
  • Assist medical/nursing providers with physical exams, gynecological exams, minor procedures/sutures, wound care, LARC procedures, EKG, nebulizer treatments, audiology/tympanometry, and other assigned procedures.
  • Provide supportive communication during procedures to promote comfort, safety, and understanding.
  • Prioritize patient safety and escalate abnormal findings promptly.
  • Adhere strictly to scope of practice and seek clarification when uncertain.
  • Perform CLIA-waived testing (hemoglobin, blood glucose, urinalysis, step, mono) per protocol.
  • Prepare and administer medications, including immunizations, as ordered and within scope.
  • Document all patient care accurately and timely in the EHR.
  • Communicate provider-directed lab and diagnostic test results per policy.
  • Reinforce provider education and utilize teach-back methods when appropriate.
  • Follow infection control standards and equipment safety protocols.
  • Maintain patient privacy and dignity throughout the encounter.
  • Communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively with patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients and the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Collaborate with providers, nurses, care coordinators, front office staff, and other departments to support coordinated patient care.
  • Schedule in-house procedures and initiate referrals to outside agencies/providers.
  • Actively participate in referral tracking, follow-up, and care coordination.
  • Communicate status updates to providers and care team members per protocol.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives, including workflow improvement and metric monitoring.
  • Assist with accurate documentation and data entry supporting UDS, HRSA, and organizational reporting.
  • Identify care gaps (e.g., immunizations, screenings, chronic disease measures) and support outreach and follow-up efforts.
  • Participate in huddles and staff meetings to review quality metrics and contribute improvement ideas.
  • Support compliance with infection control, patient safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness and disinfection of exam rooms and clinical work areas.
  • Complete refrigerator/freezer temperature logs, medication and supply expiration checks, and CLIA quality control processes as assigned.
  • Maintain and appropriately use clinical equipment; report malfunctions promptly.
  • Enter orders appropriately for completed testing and health maintenance measures.
  • Assist with desktop and workflow functions as assigned.
  • Maintain BLS certification.
  • Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development and skill validation.
  • Maintain certification (if applicable) in good standing.
  • Seek supervision appropriately and function as a reliable team member.
  • Support a culture of safety, teamwork, respectful communication, and continuous growth.
  • Participate in team meetings.
  • Fill in for other staff as needed and qualified.
  • Assist the Center Manager, Nurse Manager, or Primary Care Coordinator as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
