About The Position

The Medical Assistant - Oncology is responsible for preparing patients for provider visits, administering medications and vaccinations, assisting physicians with procedures, notifying patients of lab results, collecting specimens, performing limited lab tests, maintaining equipment and controls, ensuring patient and equipment safety, and communicating effectively with patients, families, physicians, peers, and other health team members. This role also involves facilitating patient flow, maintaining medical supplies and medications, sterilizing instruments, managing drug samples and inventory, handling prescription refills under physician supervision, and ensuring complete documentation in medical records. Administrative duties include appointment scheduling, telephone etiquette, mail handling, obtaining authorizations and co-payments, and maintaining exam rooms and workstations. The position also requires triaging patient clinical calls, performing venipuncture, scheduling tests or procedures, administering vaccinations, maintaining medical information and filing/scanning, using EMR systems, following the chain of command, demonstrating knowledge of emergency procedures, and maintaining professionalism at all times. The role may involve contact with blood or body fluids, requiring knowledge of aseptic technique and infection prevention.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a medical assistant program with certification.
  • Sufficient experience may be substituted for the educational requirement.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • Ability to accurately type and be efficient with data entry equipment.
  • Ability to apply appropriate rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of computers is a necessity.
  • Ability to prioritize activities, organize work, and problem solve.
  • Above average to excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to communicate with the public sector by telephone use and in person.
  • Ability to deal with anxious and angry people.
  • Ability to communicate with Administrative Staff, Managers, Attorneys, Physicians and all hospital staff with due respect and tact.
  • Understanding of confidentiality rules is a must without exception.
  • Current BLS Healthcare Provider card.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patients for provider visits according to approved policies and procedures, including reason for visit, history, symptoms, problems, weight, height, vital signs, medications, and allergies.
  • Administers medications to patients as ordered by a physician, including vaccinations.
  • Assists physicians with procedures as requested.
  • Notifies patients of lab and test results.
  • Collects specimens as ordered by a physician and performs limited lab tests on site.
  • Maintains equipment and controls, including refrigerator temperatures.
  • Ensures patient and equipment safety.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively with patients, families, physicians, peers, and other health team members.
  • Assists in the facilitation of smooth patient flow.
  • Greets patients and families courteously.
  • Maintains good communication with physician and coworkers.
  • Assures adequate amounts of medical supplies and medications are available and stocked appropriately.
  • Sterilizes instruments and instrument packs.
  • Maintains inventory of drug samples and inventory, rotating stock and checking expiration dates monthly.
  • Receives prescription refills calls and ensures they are sent to the pharmacy under physician supervision and documented.
  • Assures documentation in the medical records is complete, including lot numbers for vaccines and samples.
  • Performs administrative duties such as appointment scheduling, telephone etiquette, mail handling, obtaining authorizations, and collecting co-payments.
  • Maintains exam rooms and workstation and ensures cleanliness.
  • Triage patient clinical calls.
  • Performs venipuncture as ordered by the provider.
  • Schedules tests or procedures for patients.
  • Administers various vaccinations to patients as directed by physician.
  • Maintains medical information and filing and/or scanning.
  • Uses Meditech, Medisoft, Medisoft Clinical EMR or other EMR.
  • Follows appropriate chain of command for reporting issues.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • Demonstrates professionalism at all times.
  • Treats others with respect.
  • Offers assistance to other staff when able.
  • Other duties as assigned.
