About The Position

University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a 100% Medical Assistant II to work at the Neurology Clinic. Under direct supervision of a licensed independent practitioner, registered nurse, nurse manager/assistant nurse manager or other licensed designee, functions as a member of the patient care team. Performs technical, patient care and related clerical functions in the clinic setting by coordinating all elements of the patient visit. Staff will support Neurology Clinic patients, facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families, and staff. Requirements

Certification OR registration as a Medical Assistant OR completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant Program, OR Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.

Responsibilities

Facilitate the smooth flow of patients through the clinic.
Assist in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments.
Manage internal and external medical records.
Administer routine oral, rectal, or injectable medications not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment.
Perform routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood work.
Perform patient care related to vital signs, reviewing medications, allergies, lab draws, setting up and assisting with minor procedures, in-clinic treatments, point of care testing, removing staples and/or sutures, assisting with dressing changes, administering immunizations as ordered.
Stock rooms with appropriate medical supplies and linens.
Provide psychological support to the patient and family.
Attend and participate in staff meetings.
Identify vaccination needs for specific patient populations.
Perform related clerical tasks including answering phones and providing information to other departments.
Treat matters with confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
Demonstrate consideration and respect for patients, families, and co-workers.
Complete on-line and in-service education programs annually and as required/offered.
