This position prepares and maintains exam rooms, prepares charts, obtains reports and records; assists with patient flow and ensures the overall smooth running of the clinical office. The Medical Assistant II interacts directly with patients in a clinic setting and completes clinical tasks, which may include obtaining vital signs, conducting EKGs, completing a phlebotomy and verifying medications. They prepare for office hours by doing tasks such as obtaining charts, scheduling tests and preparing exam rooms. They may assist with renewal and authorization of non-narcotic medications per standing orders and department guidelines, and may administer medications under the order of physicians or nurse practitioners, including vaccines and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. This role also involves directing patient flow, assisting with special procedures/treatments, and completing requisitions. They route phone messages, patient questions, and telephone communications to appropriate personnel. Additionally, they assist with care coordination by calling patients with test results, scheduling appointments, assisting with return calls, scheduling surgeries, diagnostic procedures and admissions, and monitoring new and return patient contacts. They complete necessary paperwork and documentation in a timely manner and answer basic questions from patients/families regarding treatments, diagnosis, and procedures. The role includes monitoring supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies and equipment, and cleaning exam rooms and sterilizing instruments. Maintaining HIPAA compliance, skills/competencies, and participating in in-services, staff programs, continuing education, and cross-training programs are also key responsibilities. Compliance with OSHA, state, and federal regulatory sources/standards, and participation in quality improvement activities are expected. The position is in a normal office environment with exposure to blood-borne pathogens, requiring protective devices. Physical effort typically involves sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping, with occasional lifting of 25 lbs. or less. Equipment used includes office and clinical/diagnostic equipment.
