About The Position

The Medical Assistant II provides technical, supportive, age-specific, and developmentally appropriate patient care functions for assigned clinical areas. This role may function as a member of a Patient Centered Medical Home clinical team or perform routine administrative and clinical tasks. The Medical Assistant II possesses advanced skills and is proficient in independently maintaining a positive patient experience by consistently exceeding expectations in customer service and patient care.

Requirements

  • High school or equivalent.
  • Three years experience.
  • Certified or Registered Medical Assistant with a nationally recognized accreditation organization (AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NHA or other).
  • CPR Certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform as Medical Assistant and Front desk Registration training.
  • Effectively identify problems and determine solutions.
  • Understand clinic flow to maximize clinic usage to meet patient needs.
  • Assist with patient flow within assigned outpatient clinic setting.
  • Respond in a timely manner to call-lights.
  • Provide comfort measures to patient / family.
  • Perform technical and supportive patient care skills, incorporating the patient's plan of care and following approved policy and procedure.
  • Obtain vital signs.
  • Appropriately document chief complaint and reason for visit.
  • Use aseptic techniques and infection control measures in the performance of duties.
  • Accurately collect excretory specimens, such as urine and feces.
  • Obtain blood samples by venipuncture.
  • Accurately perform tests, such as basic urine chemistry using chemical strips, guaiac, Ph, blood glucose, UPT, and hemocult.
  • Measure and record intake and output as ordered.
  • Prepare and assist patients undergoing treatments, examinations, and procedures.
  • Recognize patient care priorities, treatment plan, objectives, and potential crisis.
  • Under direction of physician, provide other treatments and care to patients appropriate to training, as assigned.
  • Recognize and communicate patient needs and unusual occurrences with patients / families.
  • Refill patient medications as requested, using the guidelines for the prescribing physician/provider in their assigned area and in accordance with the policy C51, Prescription Refill Management for Ambulatory Care Services.
  • Safely and properly administer medications as assigned.
  • Accurately document / communicate interventions and measurements.
  • Communicate relevant information to appropriate health care provider.
  • Under supervision, complete accurate, concise, and legible documentation on patient clinic record.
  • Assist with medication reconciliation as required.
  • Assist in the maintenance of equipment, supplies, and the environment.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Check equipment / supplies for expiration dates, electrical safety tags, intactness, and usability.
  • Clean equipment and return to its proper place.
  • Report equipment and supplies needing replaced or repaired.
  • Stock rooms, carts, cabinets, etc. as assigned / requested.
  • Respect and support patient rights.
  • Serve as patient / family advocate.
  • Practice principles of patient and employee confidentiality.
  • Utilize available resources and seek assistance in dealing with ethical dilemmas, as appropriate.
  • Practice positive customer peer relations.
  • Consistently communicate in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Report and seek assistance in dealing with guest complaints / concerns.
  • Establish and maintain a positive rapport with patient / family and co-workers.
  • Consistently respond to customer requests / needs in an appropriate manner.
  • Participate in and support continuous quality improvement activities at the clinic / departmental level, as appropriate.

  • Contribute to provide education and support to patients to enable patients to make decisions and participate in their own care.
  • Contribute as a member of a clinical team accountable for a patient’s physical and mental health care needs including prevention, wellness, acute care and chronic care.
  • Participate in coordinated care across all elements of the broader health care system, including specialty care, hospitals, home health care and community services.
  • Contribute to offering patients the ability to access services with shorter waiting times, “after hours” care, 24/7 electronic or telephone access and communication through health IT.
  • Contribute to a care team of clinicians and staff to ensure that patients and families make informed decisions about their health.
  • Answer patient calls with accuracy and properly document patient needs.
  • Perform appointment scheduling, including financial counseling for day surgery, reminder calls, patient financial responsibility and future appointments.
  • Arrive patients including preparation of paperwork/charts, collection and receipting of copays, tokens distributed and authorized deferments.
  • Perform registration including eligibility, demographics and Medicare and third party coverage, communicate any obstacle to access or authorization to patient, referral source, UTMB Physician and clinical staff appropriately.
  • Dispose of patient within designated timeline.
  • Proficient in multiple specialty procedures and successful completion of all Patient Services Specialist training including refresh training.
