About The Position

Primary Health Medical Group is seeking high-performing Medical Assistant students for an extensive 4-5 week Externship program (160-180 hours, depending on school requirements). This program is exclusively for Carrington College, CWI, and MCA students. The externship includes a week-long orientation to Primary Health, a full review of policies and procedures through digital training modules, and one-on-one training with assigned preceptors to cover back-office skills. Participants will also undergo comprehensive occupational health and drug screening. The externship offers exposure to various settings and roles, including Urgent Care, Family Practice, COVID Triage, and COVID Vaccine Administration.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Nationally Accredited MA program (either fully in-person or hybrid in-person and online; didactic and skills-based education)
  • Complete an interview
  • Complete an assessment to demonstrate knowledge of triage reporting, administering medication, and venipuncture skills
  • Medical education and passing a skills assessment conducted by PHMG staff
  • Venipuncture skills
  • Customer service-oriented attitude/behavior
  • Computer proficiency. Ability to use applicable software as required to perform the essential functions of the job.

Nice To Haves

  • If offered a permanent position, students have one year to obtain their CMA or RMA license
  • Recommended vaccines to include annual Influenza, Hep B, TDaP, MMR, Varicella, and TB

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a provider and/or physician, which could include casting, bracing, and injections
  • Provide clinical triage/communication as defined by protocol or per provider instructions
  • Prepare treatment rooms for examination of patients, including sterilization, cleaning, and checks on medical equipment
  • Prepare basic laboratory tests on-premises and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Perform phlebotomy involved with proper collection, labeling, processing, and distribution of specimens for laboratory testing from patients of all ages
  • Assist the back office in managing patient flow, paperwork, and customer service
  • Provide quality customer service and patient education based on assessment of needs
  • Perform tests and procedures as ordered
  • Accurately document patient encounters and interventions performed
  • Relay provider instructions to patients
  • Assist with all non-direct patient care tasks (autoclaving, stocking room, scanning records, mailing, etc.)
  • Aid Front Office staff in managing details of patients, schedules, and referrals
  • Assist or lead in emergency situations
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patient and business functions of the organization, i.e., HIPAA
  • Perform other duties as assigned
