The Medical Assistant performs administrative and clinical duties under the direction of medical providers. The Medical Assistant duties include scheduling appointments, taking, and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by medical provider. With a Quality, Customer First, and Compassionate approach, the Medical Assistant will provide proper triage for patients, assist medical providers with procedures, and monitor, maintain, and provide appropriate follow-up flags and phone notes in EHR desktop. They will record patient medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records, and chart pertinent data in EHR. The role involves preparing treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean, and stocking exam rooms to maintain par levels. Interviewing patients to obtain medical information and measure vital signs, weight, and height, and showing patients to examination rooms and preparing them for the physician are also key duties. The Medical Assistant will prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log specimens, and prepare them for testing. Authorizing drug refills in adherence to scope of practice and refill protocol and providing prescription information to pharmacy, and explaining treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physician’s instructions to patients are also part of the role. Additionally, the Medical Assistant will clean and sterilize instruments and packs, dispose of contaminated supplies, perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses, and assist with scheduling appointments, follow-up care, referrals, and medication refills. Returning calls to patients in a timely manner and placing outgoing calls as indicated by Providers, and assisting the team to maintain proper clinic flow are expected. The role emphasizes Team Based Care and Clinical Care Collaboration, working in collaboration and continuous partnership with providers, clinical staff, and community resources in a team approach to promote access to appropriate care in the goal of enhancing patient health. Pre-Visit Team Based Planning involves reviewing the daily schedule and chart by care team, ensuring documented instructions are written on the schedule, typed into the EHR appointment note, or in the EHR as a flag or clinical list update. Ensuring the patient visit is more efficient by identifying available records from transitions of care, results from labs or diagnostics in the EHR, and labs or other services not specified in standing orders protocols are also part of the role. Participating in collaborative measures and following and initiating policy for standing orders, and scheduling appointments and entering appointment date and time into the computer are also required.
