About The Position

The Medical Assistant (MA) Apprentice is a training position intended to develop skills and gain experience in a clinical setting while enrolled in an approved Medical Assistant apprenticeship program. Under the direct supervision of administrative and clinical preceptors, the MA Apprentice provides support with administrative and basic clinical tasks while learning the full scope of a Medical Assistant's responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Enrollment in a Medical Assistant apprenticeship or training program (or willingness to enroll).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in busy environment.
  • Ability to follow instructions, accept feedback, and work in a fast paced team environment.
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn EHR systems.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in classroom and on-the-job training as part of the MA apprenticeship program.
  • Greet incoming patients using friendly, respectful communication.
  • Obtaining and documenting up to date demographic information for patients, including updated insurance information, license information, etc.
  • Accept patient payments and document accordingly.
  • Notify clinical staff that patient has arrived via the EMR and make patients aware of any unusual delay in their appointment time.
  • Answer incoming telephone calls using pleasant phone voice and proper telephone etiquette.
  • Ability to prioritize telephone encounters.
  • Monitor automated confirmation calls and update EMR.
  • Assist clinical staff in preparing examination rooms, gathering patient information, and documenting in the EMR.
  • Learn and perform basic clinical tasks such as measuring vital signs, rooming patients, and observing procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment.
  • Adhere to all safety and infection control guidelines.
  • Demonstrate ongoing progress toward program completion and required competencies.
  • Proficient with Windows based computer applications.
  • Accurate transcribing and data entry skills.
  • Excellent typing and accurate documentation of patient encounter.
  • Advise patient if they can proceed with appointment or need to reschedule.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality in alignment with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelines and InterMed policies.
  • Perform other duties to support the mission, vision and values of InterMed.
