About The Position

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is seeking a Medical Assistant Apprentice (MA Trainee) to join their team at the Peninsula Clinic in Poulsbo, WA. This is a student in training role, mentored by a Certified Medical Assistant (MA-C), preparing the apprentice to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) test. The apprentice will work closely with a preceptor, participating as a member of the clinic team. The primary focus will be learning to manage patient flow for assigned providers, performing duties and procedures as competency is demonstrated under the direction of their preceptor and supervisor. The apprenticeship is designed to last 2000 hours over one year and is sponsored by the Washington Association of Community & Migrant Health Centers (WACMHC) and accredited through South Seattle College (SSC). This role requires 8-hour shifts, Monday-Friday, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent.
Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years.
Willingness to participate in process improvement initiatives.
Proficient in email and word processing systems.
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, complex healthcare environment.
Ability to multitask, prioritize, and problem-solve.
Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to follow direction and guidance.
Ability to recognize limitations and seek help.
Ability to identify learning needs and plan learning opportunities.

Nice To Haves

Active DOH registration as an MA-R or CNA.
Ability to appropriately respond to emergencies or disasters per clinic protocol and scope of practice.
Experience with Electronic Medical Records.

Responsibilities

Manage the flow of patients for assigned providers.
Room patients and families into exam or procedure areas.
Conduct initial patient assessments, including vital signs, pain assessment, and fall risk.
Perform clerical tasks, patient transport, and cleaning/restocking of exam rooms.
Recognize symptoms of common medical illnesses, abnormal vs. normal findings, and new/existing pain, escalating appropriately to healthcare providers.
Act as a liaison between patients/families and healthcare providers.
Prepare for and set up procedures, and assist healthcare providers during procedures.
