About The Position

The Clinical Translational Research Site has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Medical Assistant 1 to work on-site in Miami, FL. The Medical Assistant (MA) 1 will perform multi-skilled tasks to assist the medical providers. The MA shall assist patients’ healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. The MA provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures, under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician. The physician in charge may delegate the tasks to oversee the MA to a Nurse or Designee in charge of the unit/clinic. The MA shall adhere to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, recognize, respond to emergencies, and demonstrate professionalism. The MA provides care within the philosophy, mission, vision, and values, as well as within the policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional, monitors the quality of care provided and nurtures a compassionate and healing environment. The MA works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent
Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant educational program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE).
Note: (If MA presently has, an active MA certification, school verification and exceptions may apply.)
Approved MA Certifications : CMA- Certified Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)®
RMA- Registered Medical Assistant - American Medical Technologists (AMT)
CCMA- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant- National Healthcare Association (NHA)
NCMA - National Certified Medical Assistant (NHA - NCCT)
NRCMA - Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NAHP)
MA - Medical Assistant without an approved certification must: provide proof of completion, from an approved educational program
Sign an Agreement Statement, stating candidate shall obtain a National wide or Statewide MA certification no more than 12 months from the date of hire.
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers
HIV & AIDS Certification: Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continue Education (CE) Certification
No previous experience required
Strong, effective communication skills with patients, families, and clinical team
Ability to adapt and exhibit flexibility to handle new, different, or changing environments
Demonstrates strong time management skills to prioritize and act proactively
Ability to uphold professional ethics and maintain patient confidentiality
The position requires mobility across different buildings within walking distance.
It also requires support at various UHealth satellite locations as needed.

Perform professionally within their clinical scope of practice skills utilizing State, Federal, and University of Miami’s standards, guidelines, relevant statues, rules, and regulations.
Incorporate protocols and standards of care into daily practice.

Abide by the standards for ethical behavior, therapeutic communication and protecting the privacy of patient information.
Demonstrate knowledge of basic medical terminology.
Assist providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam room with proper supplies, instruments, and materials, as directed.
Understand the importance of medical and surgical asepsis.
Prepare patients for physician’s care with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures.
Perform routine laboratory tests.
Perform vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and document in patient’s medical record.
Observe and report patient’s signs or symptoms changes.
Administer medication safely as directed by the physician.
Assist in patient care activities such as walking.
Escort and transport patients to various hospital locations.
Clean and/or sterilize medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique.
Schedule patients for tests and complete required forms for laboratory work.
Provide patient with provider’s care instructions and information.
Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
Order, stock, and inventory supplies, and assist in performing clerical duties.
Adhere to University and unit-level Policies & Procedures and safeguard University’s assets.
Confirm valid signed and dated informed consent for each research participant from P.I. and/or their representative before beginning any part of the study.
Provide direct research participants hands-on care in conducting the clinical study components according to the protocol (e.g., phlebotomy, frequent blood or another sampling, anthropometric measures, etc.).
Assist with scheduling participant appointments to the CTRS sites and coordinating visits with other professional services.
Measure and record vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, etc.).
Assist the physician or nurse with examinations and minor procedures.
Prepare and maintain examination rooms.
Responsible for accurately collecting, handling, preparing, and shipping research specimens as required by the individual study protocol.
Responsible for providing complete and timely reporting of pertinent clinical findings and results to PIs and/or study physicians.
Act as liaison between CTRS site and study participants, Investigators, and/or study personnel.
Maintain accurate site documentation, including physician orders, nursing flowsheets, samples, and shipment logs.
Participate in Site Initiation Visits (SIV) as required by the study team and/or sponsor.
Attend CTRS In-Services for study protocols and team meetings.
Maintain cost-effectively an appropriate inventory of clinical supplies for each CTRS site.
Submit required and requested documentation in a timely and complete fashion.
Review/onboard clinical research protocols - laboratory manuals.
Maintain compliance with the University of Miami and all Governing agency guidelines, policies, regulations, and requirements.
Completes mandatory education and training that includes a review of specific needs and other competencies required by the University of Miami and UHealth system and other pieces of training. – ULearn, Citi Training, Bio Safety, Lab Safety, OSHA, HIPPA.
