About The Position

The Med-Tech specializing in Memory & Behavioral Care is responsible for safely administering medications, supporting residents with dementia and behavioral health needs, and assisting the nursing team by monitoring resident conditions. This role plays a key part in maintaining a calm, structured, and supportive environment designed for individuals experiencing cognitive decline, memory loss, or behavioral challenges.

Requirements

  • Completion of state-approved Medication Technician/Medication Aide training.
  • Current certification/registration as required by state regulations.
  • Strong understanding of dementia progression, behavior cues, and de-escalation strategies.
  • Ability to prioritize safety, maintain calm under pressure, and support residents with complex needs.
  • Strong observation, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Basic proficiency with electronic health records (EHR/EMR).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in memory care, dementia care, behavioral health, or assisted living highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Safely administer prescribed medications following facility protocols and state regulations.
  • Accurately document medication administration, refusals, and resident responses.
  • Maintain medication carts, storage, and supplies in compliance with infection control and safety standards.
  • Report medication errors, adverse reactions, and concerns promptly to the nurse on duty.
  • Ensure correct use of psychotropic medications, monitoring effectiveness and side effects.
  • Use dementia-friendly communication techniques, cueing, redirection, and reassurance during care.
  • Observe residents for changes in mood, behavior, or health status and document/report findings.
  • Assist with behavior-management strategies, including de-escalation and non-pharmacological interventions.
  • Support residents with ADLs as needed, especially when behaviors or cognitive changes impact self-care.
  • Promote a calming, structured environment that reduces agitation and overstimulation.
  • Recognize behavioral triggers, wandering patterns, or early signs of distress.
  • Follow individualized behavior-support plans created by nursing, social services, and behavioral specialists.
  • Employ trauma-informed care approaches to promote resident safety and emotional comfort.
  • Support safe meal service, hydration, and engagement for residents prone to distraction, refusal, or agitation.
  • Maintain compliance with state regulations for medication delegation and memory-care operations.
  • Adhere to infection-control practices, including hand hygiene and proper PPE use.
  • Assist in maintaining a secure environment, preventing elopement/wandering events.
  • Participate in emergency drills, incident reporting, and follow-up documentation.
  • Keep resident information confidential in alignment with HIPAA and facility policy.
  • Work closely with LPNs, RNs, CNAs, caregivers, and wellness/activity teams to ensure resident needs are met.
  • Communicate changes in condition, behavior, or medication-related concerns to nursing staff.
  • Participate in shift huddles, care planning discussions, and in-service training.
  • Support and mentor caregivers on dementia-friendly and behavioral-safety techniques.
  • Interact compassionately and professionally with residents and families.
  • Provide updates (within role scope) on daily routines, behaviors, and general well-being.
  • Help create a welcoming, supportive environment for family visits and engagement.
