About The Position

The Med Tech (MT/MLT) in the Laboratory performs a variety of technical procedures including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and venipuncture. These procedures can be performed using manual, semi-automated, or automated methodologies. The role involves adhering to accepted quality control procedures and carrying out appropriate proficiency testing. The position requires accurate and precise execution of established laboratory procedures, reporting of "panic values" within 10 minutes, and documentation of these reports. The Med Tech verifies acceptable quality control values, notifies supervisors of quality control problems, and ensures the correct specimen is analyzed for the proper patient and test procedures. Daily maintenance, reagent labeling, and organizing work to meet acceptable turnaround times are also key responsibilities. The role demands the ability to coordinate simultaneous tests accurately, adjust scheduling for stat orders and workload variations, and verify completed test results in a timely manner. A thorough understanding of laboratory policies, procedures, and the ability to differentiate and determine the accuracy of test results are essential. The Med Tech must recognize and investigate unexpected variations in test results, perform repeat tests when necessary, and consult with the laboratory director or supervisor. Judging specimen adequacy, reordering specimens, rerunning panic values, and documenting unscheduled maintenance are also part of the duties. Discarding expired reagents and supplies, performing and documenting corrective actions for unacceptable QC, and assessing situations to choose appropriate courses of action are required. The role involves working well with physicians and others in authority, providing courteous direction and assistance to patients, families, and visitors, and respecting patient confidentiality. Handling telephone requests with courtesy and accuracy, performing duties independently with minimal supervision, and suggesting improvements to laboratory operations are expected. Adherence to laboratory safety and infection control policies, including chemical hazard procedures, and understanding fire, safety, and evacuation procedures are mandatory. The employee must be an effective and productive member of the clinic with predictable and consistent attendance.
