The position of Medical Laboratory Technician requires an associate's degree from an accredited institution and a minimum of twelve months' internship in all laboratory departments or a Medical Laboratory Technician student that has successfully completed coursework and internship rotation in the assigned area. This role involves performing all routine laboratory testing, rotating through different bench areas, assisting with specimen processing, maintaining a clean work area, orienting new staff, and providing accurate and reproducible results. The technician will utilize critical thinking skills to interpret data, report results within established timeframes, and perform independent problem-solving for patient samples, equipment, and testing procedures. Responsibilities also include recognizing and notifying clinicians of critical results, performing quality control, participating in proficiency testing and continuing education, operating the LIS and other computer programs, performing venipunctures and capillary sticks, and assisting with new procedures and reagent preparation. Excellent customer service to patients, families, providers, and staff is essential. The role also includes general accountabilities such as greeting patients and staff courteously, reporting for shifts on time, adhering to hospital policies, wearing identification badges, attending meetings and in-services, identifying educational needs, practicing cooperation and respect, promoting diversity and inclusion, following infection control and safety procedures, and complying with hospital and union policies. The technician must be able to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations.
