About The Position

The Medication Technician administers medications and treatments as prescribed by the resident's physician. May also perform the usual and customary duties of a caregiver and may provide training and orientation to new med-techs/care givers as assigned. The Lead Medication Technician also plans, oversees and participates in training, development, and delivery of continuous quality improvement of assigned Med Techs.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and/or assists with the self-administration of routine and non-routine medications in accordance to physician orders.
  • Performs delegated tasks as directed by the nurse.
  • Completes simple treatments and reports resident vital signs as directed.
  • Maintains accurate records of medications and treatments administered or omitted on each resident’s medication administration record. This includes reporting the reason medications were omitted or PRN medication was given.
  • Records narcotics administered or received on the appropriate controlled drug count sheet, reporting all medication errors immediately.
  • Reports and records changes in resident conditions, incidents and accidents to the nurse.
  • Routinely communicates pharmacy and nurse as indicated to assure medications are received in a timely manner.
  • Properly stores medications and equipment and keeps the medication room clean and orderly.
  • Removes out-dated or discontinued medications for return to the pharmacy.
  • Provides direct resident care while promoting resident dignity, independence and choice.
  • Regularly observes residents' physical and mental conditions and reports changes to LPN Supervisor.
  • Assists with or performs resident ADL’s, takes vital signs and weights an accurately documents care services provided and observations on communication log and incident reports.
  • Greets residents, visitors and staff courteously and in a manner that respects dignity, confidentiality standards and promotes individual rights.

  • Follows and supports community fire safety and infection control practices and promptly reports any unsafe conditions or equipment to a supervisor.
  • Performs First Aid and initiates emergency response procedures as required.
  • Attends and participates in training, in-services and staff meetings.
  • Participates in additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor, aligned with qualifications and can be reasonably expected to be completed with minimal orientation.
  • As a Lead Medication Technician you are responsible for guiding and supporting the med techs and must have the ability to make independent decisions for and on the behalf of your co-workers.
  • You must be able to take the lead and deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public, whilst maintaining a professional appearance, courteous demeanor, and timely management of questions and/or issues brought to your attention.
  • Regularly guide and help medication technicians to promote personal safety and a safe environment for residents by observing infection control practices, following facility guidelines, and reporting unsafe situation to the Supervisors/LPNs.
  • Guide and help medication technicians to check each resident routinely to ensure that his/her personal care needs are being met in accordance with his/her wishes and periodically tactfully check with the residents that this is being done.
  • Make sure that medication technicians are following all established safety precautions in the performance of all duties.
  • Monitor all charting: MARS, ADLS etc for completeness and accuracy on a day to day basis.
  • Maintain a work environment/ med room that is clean and presents a professional image.
  • Orient and mentor new staff in facility policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the staffing assignments to create accountability for the care provided, deal with call-offs by calling coworkers/agency when out of hours or contacting relevant people within normal working hours.
  • Monitor and check that Medication Technicians are ordering and checking in medications in a timely manner.
