About The Position

Med Surg Registered Nurses are responsible for assessing and identifying patient needs and implementing and monitoring patient medical plans and treatments. A PRN shift is available from 7p-7a.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current RN License (BSN OR ADN)
  • Current CPR certification
  • RN's required to have 30 hours by a Board approved provider or Verification of competency - at least 500 hours practiced as evidence by employer certification in order to renew and maintain current RN license

Nice To Haves

  • Current ACLS (new hires - within 90 days of hire)
  • Current PALS (new hires - within 90 days of hire)
  • Prior experience in medical field preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assess physical, psychosocial, growth and development of the patient.
  • Nursing assessment is completed at the beginning of each shift and as patient's condition changes.
  • Admission assessment is completed on assigned patients within 12 hours of admission.
  • Inform physician in a timely manner based on implications and severity of significant deviations from the norm of the patient’s condition.
  • Follow unit based and age appropriate guidelines in performing patient assessment.
  • Develop plan of care within 12 hours based on nursing assessment, customized to include patient specific problems and needs.
  • Include patient/family involvement in discharge planning and teaching needs in the plan of care.
  • Conduct patient rounds every two hours.
  • Process physician orders by ward clerks and co-sign within 2 hours. Process stat orders within 15 min. and routine orders within 2 hours.
  • Administer medications per hospital policy.
  • Assign patients to team members based on knowledge, skill level and patient acuity.
  • Update and revise plan of care following medical orders, and in accordance with nursing policy and procedures as patient condition and needs change and input updated from other team members.
  • Notify nurse manager and/or medical personnel immediately of potential patient crisis situations.
  • Revise patient care assignments based on unit census and activity, team members, availability, patient care needs and patient acuity.
  • Document assessment, assignments, resolutions, planned goals and nursing care per policy.
  • Document crisis situations before end of shift including patient condition preceding, during and after the crisis, as well as medication, treatments provided and outcome or status at end of shift.
  • Communicate accurate shift reports reflecting patient status and needs in order of priority at the beginning and ending of the shift and upon patient transfer.
  • Consult appropriate hospital department or external agency to justify patient’s immediate transport and discharge.
  • Provide pertinent and timely information to members of the nursing team and the multi-disciplinary patient care team.
  • Use a professional, helpful and friendly manner in interactions with hospital personnel and customers.
