This position assists the Registered Nurse (RN) with the daily care of patients, including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, activity orders, and ambulation. The role involves measuring and documenting vital signs, intake and output, and daily weights, as well as accurately documenting patient information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The PCIA participates in patient admissions, transfers, and discharges under RN supervision, ensuring patient call lights are accessible and promptly answered. They perform purposeful rounding, communicate observations to the RN, and handle patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling. The role also includes tasks related to patient nutritional needs, maintaining skin integrity, and ensuring special patient supplies are provided. Specimen collection and point-of-care testing are also part of the responsibilities. The PCIA may be required to remove IVs, provide post-mortem care, and perform bladder scans under RN direction. They must practice infection prevention policies, coordinate tests and treatments, and maintain a working knowledge of the EHR system and other computer systems for ordering supplies. The role involves processing daily patient charges, facilitating communication, screening telephone calls, and monitoring/troubleshooting office equipment. Compiling chart forms and obtaining medical records for transfers are also key duties. The PCIA is responsible for verifying medical record accuracy and establishing positive customer relations within a harmonious work environment. They must demonstrate knowledge and skills for age-appropriate patient care, understanding growth and development principles and assessing patient status based on age-specific needs.
