This position is responsible for performing all routine laboratory testing. The role involves rotating through different bench areas of the laboratory, including evenings and weekends as required. Key functions include specimen computer entry and processing, maintaining a clean work area, orienting new staff, and training MLT students. The technician will provide accurate and reproducible results for routine, complex, manual, and automated testing, utilizing critical thinking to interpret data and evaluate test results. Reporting results within established timeframes, demonstrating independent problem-solving for patient samples, equipment, and procedures, and recognizing critical results are essential. The role also includes performing and understanding quality control programs, participating in proficiency testing and continuing education, and proficiently operating the LIS and other computer programs. Additionally, the technician will perform venipunctures and capillary sticks as required, assist in preparing new procedures and reagents, and provide excellent customer service. The list of duties is not exhaustive and may be expanded by the supervisor. General accountabilities include greeting patients and staff courteously, reporting for shifts on time and prepared, adhering to hospital policies, wearing identification, attending meetings, identifying educational needs, practicing cooperation and professionalism, promoting diversity and inclusion, adhering to HIPAA and privacy laws, following infection control procedures, and complying with safety policies and hospital/union handbooks. The position requires the ability to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations.
