Mechatronics Engineer

CircuitHub•South Deerfield, MA
•$80,000 - $200,000•Onsite

About The Position

CircuitHub is hiring a Mechatronics Engineer to develop and scale The Grid, its factory-scale robotics platform for small-batch, high-mix electronics assembly. Mechatronics Engineers own projects end to end, from identifying and specifying a problem—often on the factory floor—through mechanism selection, CAD design, engineering calculations, prototyping, building, and software implementation on CircuitHub’s in-house robotics operating system. This is a design role with hands-on prototyping in an in-house CNC shop. The work spans mechanical design, robotics, machine software, sensing, testing, commissioning, and production deployment. CircuitHub works AI-first, using AI tools and agents to assist with problem scoping, CAD, calculations, and software development. Basic software engineering skills are needed, but a software background is not; a dedicated software engineering team builds and supports the operating system. The company seeks engineers who have built things before, ideally robots, and who can diagnose system-wide failures from first principles, prototype mechanical and software fixes, work autonomously, communicate across sites, and take responsibility for machine performance in live production. The position is full-time and on-site at CircuitHub’s factory in South Deerfield, Western Massachusetts.

Requirements

  • Must have built things before; robotics experience is ideal, whether gained as a hobbyist, student, employee, or founder.
  • Able to diagnose system-wide failures from first principles.
  • Able to prototype mechanical and software fixes on the fly.
  • Able to work autonomously and communicate clearly with a team spread across sites.
  • Willing to take responsibility for machine performance in live production.
  • Basic software engineering skills; a software background is not required.
  • For candidates at the lower end of the experience range: prior experience building systems, some exposure to robotics or automation, experience seeing parts and subsystems through to manufacture as part of a design team, knowledge of designing for machining, and a strong interest in practical robotics.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience programming machines, including PLCs, robot controllers, embedded systems, or Python.
  • Experience programming and running CNC machinery.
  • Experience designing chemical-handling machinery.
  • Optics experience.
  • For candidates at the upper end of the experience range: leadership of large-scale automated-system builds and deployments, experience writing software that controls their own machines, design experience across manufacturing methods such as machining, sheet metal, and injection moulding, and experience mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Understand problems, often on the factory floor, and turn them into clear specifications.
  • Generate ideas and select appropriate mechanisms for robotics and handling tasks.
  • Design mechanisms, gantries, and end effectors in CAD and validate designs with engineering calculations.
  • Prototype and build machines, including machining parts in the in-house CNC shop.
  • Use the in-house robotics operating system to program machine behavior.
  • Analyze end-effector behavior from video and revise geometry and control approaches to improve throughput and reliability.
  • Specify sensors to detect errors during machine operation or monitor chemical processes.
  • Prototype and deploy robots for in-line PCB validation.
  • Commission machines and hand them over to the build team for scaling.
  • Work across US and UK sites to share learnings and shape the roadmap.
  • Diagnose system-wide failures, develop mechanical and software fixes, and take responsibility for machine performance in live production.
